Re: Playback in other programs with Finale open

I'm not an expert, but I solved the hogging-the-audio problem by using something called FlexASIO, https://github.com/dechamps/FlexASIO . From the website: While ASIO4ALL and ASIO2KS use a low-level Windows audio API known as Kernel Streaming (also called "DirectKS", "WDM-KS") to operate, and ASIO2WA...

Re: Speedy Entry Problems

You might try pressing Esc when the crowding happens, then click in the measure again and keep going. You'll probably want to turn off the "Fill with rests at end of measure" option, though.

Re: Speedy Entry Problems

Indeed. Occasionally, if I'm doing something complicated and things are a jumble, I'll exit and let it respace, but usually it's not a problem.

Simple Entry enlarges the measure as you go along, and even moves it to the next system if necessary, so that's another option.

Re: Speedy Entry Problems

I don't think systems need be locked. Here I respaced the default document, then entered a run of sixteenths. As far as I know, Speedy doesn't widen the measure on the fly, so you're stuck with however much space there is to begin with until it's respaced.

Re: Crescendos and other non-horizontal/vertical lines jumbled in PDF

PDF is a vector format, so DPI shouldn't matter much, if at all.

Attached is a zipped PDF of some crescendi I made. It looks good with Adobe Reader on my screen. Try it and report.

Is the pitch right? Make sure you're playing back at the same sample rate it was recorded at.

Re: Nested septuplet causing a problem

Peter, I finally wrapped my brain around this--very clever! I found that "fill with rests" is confused by this--if you enter this at the beginning of a 4/4 measure then move to the next measure, Finale removes the final tuplet, turning the quarter into a half! (Enter the rest manually and all is wel...

If like to see it. I started to tune in this morning, but there were several hoops to jump through, including signing up to be spammed.

Re: Accidentals repeated in certain bars

"Frozen" is Finale jargon. Basically, it's what forces a cautionary accidental to appear. Just running the Cautionary Accidentals plug-in won't clear the frozen state. You might try clearing all frozen accidentals and rerunning the cautionary accidentals plug-in, though I hesitate to suggest that si...

Nick, did you try running file maintenance as I suggested to see if that reduces the file size?

Re: Finale crashing but recovery okay

Yes, fin* files. A "zuillion" of them. I'm not surprised this is causing Finale to crash. Whoever programmed the temporary file handling in Finale was in over their head. If you're using Finale's default for your temp directory, the OS should be taking care of cleaning them up for you. If you've se...

Motet,

With playback, are you talking about crashing, or hanging with HP processing?

Zuill
I don't use HP. Very occasionally when I use playback Finale crashes, but I can't characterize it further, alas.

My only crashes are either with JW plug-ins or playback.

Re: Accidentals repeated in certain bars

Are you using the Cautionary Accidentals plug-in? There is an option "No cautionaries on repeated notes" - be sure that's checked. Long ago this happened to me as a result of the plug-in. I'm not sure why. For a long time the plug-in has been problem-free with the settings shown below. Somehow the n...

Re: Nested septuplet causing a problem

I was able to achieve this just by checking "allow horizontal drag" (and dragging):

It doesn't quite play back right (though close), but one could mute it and put this in another layer for playback:

Re: Nested septuplet causing a problem

Tried it in Speedy as well as the tuplet tool, to no avail. Seems like you can do "...in the space of 1" for an inner tupet, but not "in the space of 2," so I tried starting with a half+quarter outer tuplet, but that didn't work either.

I don't think the frame editor can get at the tuplet stuff.

Make sure you did what's shown in the picture below. Playing the file again might also clear the HP data.

For the large file, try Document/Data check/File maintenance.

Re: 1) weird trill marking 2) why are attachments now "too large?"

Sounds like hidden notes added by Human Playback. It should clean up after itself but sometimes it doesn't--perhaps Finale crashed or something otherwise interrupted it. You can try going to the MIDI tool and selecting Apply Human Playback from the MIDI menu (NOT the MIDI/Audio menu). There's a choi...

Re: Best MIDI Keyboard for Finale

It depends to some extent to what kind of music you're doing, but 25 keys is pretty small--that's only two octaves. They have ways of switching those octaves up and down, but you might find yourself having to switch often, which can slow you down. On the other hand, if you want to be mobile with key...
