Re: Can someone recommend a plug-in for additional sounds?
Can anybody recommend a soundfont plug-in compatible with Finale? Hmm. Finale's playback capabilities are largely unchanged in well over a decade, in what is a fast-moving area. Finale still only supports VST2 on Windows, which limits your choice, as many plug-ins are EOL-ing VST2. (E.g. Kontakt 7 ...

Re: Error Notice
Yes, I get the error if I leave Finale open overnight. I can hold down Return, which presses "OK" on the error message about 35 times, until the errors are cleared. But it's probably best just to relaunch Finale.

Re: Artificial Intelligence to convert flat pdf's to MusicXML
There's this recent podcast on Scoring Notes about using Machine Learning in OMR (optical Music Recognition.) https://www.scoringnotes.com/podcast/from-zero-to-slice/ There are a fair few academic papers on the subject; and there are several OMR github projects, in various states, some of which use ...

Re: Style guides for choral music?
To follow up on what BuonTempi wrote about breath marks, I agree that they often require discussion and I have found that it saves rehearsal time to notate all breaths as rests. It requires a little extra time on my end but definitely saves time in rehearsal. Do you never change your mind...?...

Check MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > Audio Setup, and make sure that the input and output sources are correct.
Try trashing the user prefs.
Did you reinstall Finale, or just migrate?

Re: Style guides for choral music?
I concur with the recommendation of Elaine Gould's book, Behind Bars, which is a general and comprehensive guide to style and practice in notation. One thing I would say: Don't bother marking breaths in an edition. They will ignored and changed by most choir directors. Unless this is an edition sole...

Re: Finale changes the plug-in volume on playback
The dial is probably responding to CC7 data coming from Finale. Set the volume in Finale, using the sliders for the VST or Audio Unit.

Re: Noteperformer 4 released
I'm still very fond of the Garritan libraries and ARIA Player; particularly the fact that you can edit the instrument definitions. I might publish a detailed guide to correcting all the errors, creating new instruments, and other 'hacks', if I thought anyone was prepared to do the work, rather than ...

Re: Noteperformer 4 released
On a related matter: is GPO essentially dead? While I’ve used GPO5 for a few years now as it is certainly better than much of what comes with the built-in Garritan sounds for Finale, a lot of it pales in comparison with NP, as well as other sample libraries. No updates in a long time and frankly, N...

Re: Noteperformer 4 released
Indeed. NP4 essentially levels the playing field for audio output across the three major notation programs, allowing you to use some the big Pro sample libraries effortlessly. It's fair to say that Finale gets the largest benefit from this levelling, as Finale's MIDI Editor and other functions for c...

Noteperformer 4 released
NP4 has just been released. The big feature is the ability to control other VSTs, i.e. doing its phrasing magic and mixing, but using other sample libraries for the sounds.

You can import MusicXML into Logic, which contains much more musical data than MIDI.

Re: Converting File with Petrucci to Maestro
When did this change happen, and why? The move to SMuFL format music fonts was one of the headline features of Finale 27, when it was released in 2021. https://www.finalemusic.com/blog/sneak-peek-2-smufl-support/ (Always worth checking what you're getting for your money! :P ) Michael Good, the inve...

Re: Default page format
If you always want to start every new document as A4, then you need to edit the default documents on which new documents are based. The Setup Wizard uses the "Document Styles" files. I don't know whether they are found on Windows, but on a Mac they are at: /Users/<yourUserName>/Library/Application S...

Re: Incompatibility of Finale Maestro with older Finale versions
As motet says, you can create a new document in the Setup Wizard using "Legacy Defaults". You can change old, legacy documents into SMuFL ones in Finale 27.3, but you can't change them in the other direction, 'against the tide of progress'. Screenshot 8.png Given that; I doubt that PrintMusic (which...

Re: Vers. 27 compatibility with Catalina and later OS
Here's MM's System Requirements page: https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/216545087-Finale-Notation-Software-System-Requirements Finale 27.3 works on Mojave and higher. There should be no difference in how it runs on any of the supported OSes. They have widely heralded that Finale is now...

Re: Third-party Smufl-compliant fonts in Finale 27.3?
as I understand it, Finale can only use the ones that are included with Version 27. No, Finale can use any SMuFL-compliant font: Bravura, Sebastian, November2, etc. Screenshot.png Just make sure that you've installed the JSON metadata file into the correct location. Re: save to mp3
I'm old enough to remember when Finale did offer exporting to .mp3 in addition to .aif and .wav. The What's New pages show that Saving as MP3 was introduced as late as 2005. Save As AIF/WAV was 2004. The earliest Help file I can find online is 2009 , saying "Compressed audio files are not supported...

Re: save to mp3
Since playing back Garritan can save WAV data, there's no reason it can't convert that to MP3 when it's done playing and then delete the WAV data. My point was it's indicative of the glacial pace of development of Finale, when hardware limitations from the 90s are still relevant. (q.v. "Redraw Scre...

Re: save to mp3
I didn't know that about not being able to record Garritan as mp3. There's really no technical reason why not, I don't think. Even the most powerful Pentium with 64 Mb of RAM and a fast ATA hard drive couldn't possibly render the audio in real time while simultaneously compressing the data and savi...

Re: save to mp3
What the Help file doesn't explain clearly is that if you're using the Garritan samples, or Noteperformer, or any other VST/AU, Finale won't export as MP3, only as AIFF or WAV, and you'll have to compress it via some other app. Screenshot 23.png Finale will only save an MP3 if you're using the Smart...

The Apple "Magic" Trackpad 2. I have no issues with precision -- though I don't do enter notes with the pointer, as some do. But I do graphic work in Affinity Designer and other apps, and I can make tiny adjustments. I remember the first time I tried to draw freehand with the mouse. It was terrible!...

Re: Check WHICH libraries loaded in a Document
It has to be said that 'another notation app' has a very nice implementation to address exactly this, in which you can compare all objects and options in one document against those of another, and copy over any or all that are different or missing. This is exactly the kind of thing that should have ...

On MacOS, you can normally scroll horizontally by holding SHIFT, if your mouse just has a vertical scroll wheel.
Personally, once I tried the Apple Trackpad, I never wanted to use a mouse again!
