Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

yes, apparently it does.

I guess I prefer Finale's way of locking the constrain.

I tried the Dorico way, and notice that it's not a "real" lock. In the sense that you CAN change axis after beginning movement and the constrain will then switch to the new direction.

Re: O/T orchestral parts question

I'm just finding that I can't put decent page turns in the soloist's part.

I mean, yes, I have a few that are ok, but then one VERY tight one, and then there's a perpetuum mobile section where it's simply impossible to find anywhere to insert a page turn.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

with Dorico, you have to start moving THEN press the constrain key (shift, if I recall correctly).
during that split second of "free movement" (before you press that constrain key) there is a high probability that the item you're moving WILL move off the axis you intended.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Something I like about Finale that I can't for the life of me figure out how to do in Dorico: Finale gives you the option of always having "free" dragging of objects OR always constrain, with a trigger key to cause the opposite action for those times you require it. Dorico, on the other hand, has a ...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

I used Modus Novus in college and still have it! It might be asking too much to have a repetiteur to play from the full score rather than a piano reduction! I still have my copy of Modus Novus as well. and yes, having worked as an accompanist for opera, I could at the time sight read anything you p...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

I think the important opinions are from the people who actually perform the music: the conductors.
So ask conductors which they prefer, "in C" or transposed.
I will hazard a guess (based on the conductors I've worked with) that the vast majority will without hesitation say "transposed".

Thanks for your extensive reply, BuonTempi. I'm not sure that I followed you quite. If I have a two-flute 'condensed' staff in the score, does Dorico automatically split all of it, the homorhythmic and the polyphonic sections, without further ado?
yes, it does.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

as far as I know, and have had confirmed by people at Dorico, cut-away staves is for now impossible in Dorico.
there MIGHT be a way of fudging it graphically, but it's going to be considerably more work than it's worth.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

I have to say, you guys make Dorico really sound exciting. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) Finale does what I need. But I certainly enjoy hearing about it. honestly, if the good folks at Dorico hadn't had an "end of summer" special on their program, I might never have bought it. but with the c...

it just sounds like a poorly constructed part.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

You can do it with JW Staff Polyphony. I don’t know if it’s anywhere in the standard plugins. except Dorico does it natively, and without affecting parts you might want to extract. this "condensing" function (which I haven't had the pleasure of trying yet) affects the full score only. and it can be...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

well, news from moi: it took me around a half hour total to figure out how to optimize and implement those choices, into the orchestral parts of my violin concerto. so around an hour of work to layout parts, including ideal page turns, cues, etc... that's a LOT faster than I could ever have done it ...

Re: 2nd Violin

I think part of the problem (at least it was for me) is that in band scores, "cue" in a part can mean "play if there is no (insert another instrument name)". For example, it's common to have an alternate "cue" line for a saxophone to play when there is no cor anglais in the band. but then, in orches...

O/T orchestral parts question

obviously, it's best to have good page turns in an orchestral part because chances are the musicians will have had minimal rehearsal time. However... when it comes to the soloists part in a concerto, does it matter QUITE as much? Technically, shouldn't a soloist have their music (mostly) memorized f...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

David, quite honestly, it took me less than a week to get moderately comfortable with D. Then a few weeks to start getting used to keyboard shortcuts for things. And now I'm on to more complex things, like all the spacing issues with making parts and page turns. I think that what might appear scary ...

You know, I'm not posting pro-Dorico stuff just because I like Dorico better, or think it's a better product, or I'm a shill for their software. I post things about Dorico because I honestly think MakeMusic could/should learn from what its clients/users NEED and what things their major competitors a...

Re: Iambic Speedy Entry

this IS one of the spots where I find that Dorico is easier to use. setting the base value of the notes in your tuplet (for example starting out with eighths), you can enter any note value, and it will create 8th note triplets but subdivided or tied, or whatever, for the note value you're inputting....

Re: Why do other instruments often sound like a trumpet?

it sometimes does that when you've just opened Finale and haven't played anything yet. I just have gotten into the habit of pressing "play" for a second or two, before doing anything. It makes sure that the correct instruments are loaded into the correct slots. I think that trumpet-ish sound must be...

Re: not specifically Finale, contrabass question

thank-you so much for your time, Andreo.

I have many string players at my disposal for questions (and my own viola), but sadly, no contrabass player. so far I've had to go see whatever bass players in the orchestra seemed least busy just before an orchestra rehearsal to get answers to my questions!

ah, I might have misunderstood which string to use for the artificial harmonics (at bar 24+). that's the same sort of response as "just create a floating text item with the same font as measure numbers".

basically you just said "use a work-around" for something that's missing from Dorico.
