Re: Avoiding using cumbersome ties
I have gone through a large number of tangos, rumbas, and other Latin American pieces. Many use a division of a 4/4 measure into 3+3+2 eights. (It's common in jazz and pop too.) Every one of them used dotted-quarter then eighth-tied-to-quarter then quarter. One can look at various practices on todot...

Re: Deleted notes still display
In may case, I think (but do not have enough evidence) that it has something to do with Microsoft Updates interacting with either Finale or the display drivers. I had not problems then they started last fall. I do have other weird experiences unrelated to Finale so this may be of this type. I couldn...

Re: Deleted notes still display
I've had a similar problem for about two years. It started with one of the Windows 10 updates but I don't remember which one. When I edit, I get colored remnants of previous stuff. It's intermittent. I just use <ctrl>D to fix things. I spent six months trying various things with Make Music. They cou...

Re: natural sign above staff
I did read the same thing as Anders did about measuring dissonance above the bass in the Renaissance. I do not remember where. It was some historical book but I don't remember the actual topic. One amusing thing I have found (and have been told by others) is that is't not too hard to accompany music...

Re: Conga Technique for Finale
I picked up most of my knowledge of Latin drumming from the internet. There are lots of things about Latin Drumming. Victor Lopez has a page about this. I just look up things like "conga drum patterns" (and replace conga with the other drums). The clave rhythm is an important organizational techniqu...

Re: Conga Technique for Finale
I use Finale 26 and when I use the two percussion libraries "percussion layouts" and "GWI layouts" (I use the GWI congas). I then edit the layout (not much required) as the there are no requitos in Garritan stuff and the bass conga, bass tumba, and bass super tumba, have the same staff lines as the ...

Re: Figured Bass Analysis
The 64 chord (in common practice) takes special handling. I find it easier just to note that there are several places that they occur. The most common is in a cadential context (as being discussed above). Some form of a subdominant (ii, augmented sixth, Neapolitan Sixth, IV) followed by a I64 then a...

Re: Garritan
You do have to tell Finale where to put them sometimes. The Garritan installation program is supposed to connect things for you. If not, Finale (Make Music Site) has the equivalent of a FAQ; it's a bunch of paragraphs of instructions which tell you how to do various things; these are under "Support"...

Nice. Thanks.
(I couldn't get the voices to work as I couldn't get speedy entry to work. Probably some setting I have.)
One month's curiosity is next month's technique.

Re: Ties Between Notes Different Laers
It's in Apel's "Historical Anthology of Music" (older stuff) page 168 (Piece 153). It's also in Apel's "Masters of the Keyboard." I "fixed" the problem for my version by letting the voices cross for that one note. The whole thing's sort of a borderline case. I found it interesting because I hadn't t...

Ties Between Notes Different Laers
I'm transcribing (just to hear it) a toccata by Merulo. He ha a place where there are tied notes in different voices (I can play this on a keyboard instrument so it makes sense). The particular case is easy to describe: halfnote F+A and halfnote D+F in the same 2/2 measure. The upper notes belong to...

One thing to note is that after pasting, the pastee is highlighted so one may transpose that region only.

Re: I'm Outta Here
I've had the same redraw during edit that is described in the OP. I spend about 6 weeks with Make Music on the problem. They could not reproduce it. I've been through several major Windows 10 updates and the problem persists. I have it on two computers (both HP), but one is a laptop and the other a ...

Re: Piano "rolls"
It's possible also to get a more articulated arpeggio. I've done this for harp and for piano. Example: I wanted a 7-note arpeggio in 32nd-notes, slightly delayed, in a quarter-note time space. I just wrote a 32nd-rest then a 32nd note tied to a 16th-note tied to an eighth; above this, I wrote a 16th...

Re: Drum set issue
I found another advantage in using several Aria players for different groups of instruments. My current setup is a few woodwinds (flute, clarinet), brass (two trumpets, trombone), piano, bass (plucked acoustic 2 or a bowed bass with lots of pizzicato) and several percussion (congas, bongos, timbales...

Re: Playback won't start at the beginning
Does this happen on all files or just one? That might be a clue. I've never had the problem. I alternate between "leftmost measure" and a numbered measure (either 1 or the beginning of a section) continually; it always works. Try without using "human playback" or try with a file consisting of a sing...

Re: Stay open or shut it down?
I shut down all such programs. It's been my experience that all large programs have some subtle bugs that often only occur in long runs. These often depend on things like small memory leaks. (Modern languages are difficult to write bug-free programs in and even so, the operating systems also have th...

Re: How to get the most out of JABB
To get better results I use two processes. First (and probably least) is the Human Playback settings. I use a Custom setting based either on Romantic or Latin or Baroque or the like depending on what I want it to sound like. Then in the "Custom Style" stuff, regardless of other settings I do the fol...

Re: GPO5 and v25 help
I'm not sure how to make it default, but there is a method (I don't remember the exact steps but it's easy) to tell Finale the order of VST libraries to search. (I think should have written that in German.) For the strings (and other instruments) I use the Human Playback and slur the connected notes...

Re: Scroll VIew displays funny
I'm in the right layer. It does look a bit like stuff are moving to another layer and back. However <cntl>D erasing seems strange too. I've tried rebooting and reloading. It's strange that it happens on two different computers; I'd think a stuck key or something like that would only affect one. It's...

Scroll VIew displays funny
I've got a new problem (at least I don't remember if from last November to December; I was gone in January and when I started using Finale 26, a weird problem cropped up). In Scroll View (but not in Page View or Studio View as far as I can tell), when I edit (Simple Entry) a note or chord, sometimes...

Re: Garritan Ambience
For the convolution ambience, I just try a short (4-8 measure) segment, all on one Aria player and see which I like best. The description of the setting is pretty close: clubs are low echo with short reverb times and caves sound hollow. A convolution ambience is rather clever; it gives the effect of...

Re: Finale 26 issues?
I've got one problem since I put FInale 26 on two different computers. When using Simple Entry and changing a note (like to a rest or rest to a note or moving a note up or down using the arrow keys...) the "old" position continues to display (including flags and the like.) Using <CTRL>E twice remove...
