Re: Need a book
There's a help index and tutorials built into Finale. There's a series of Youtube videos by Jason Lofreddo that are pretty good https://www.conqueringfinale.com/

Re: Toggle Articulation Playback
If you otherwise want to use Human Playback except for certain instruments/measures you can create an expression to control it on an individual basis. Create a new expression and in the playback tab of the expression from the "type" drop-down menu select HP on (or "off"). I have to use this occasion...

Re: editing frame anomaly
The file you posted only consists of an empty staff, unlike the picture, so I couldn't check it. Perhaps superfluous, but the letter "o" will hide a note; the number "0" will close or open the speedy entry window.

Bill Stevens wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 8:02 pmUse the Note Mover tool to move the whole note to the left. (Note it is in layer 2.)
Also, make sure you have the Edit Filter set correctly and it should copy correctly.

Re: tempo markings
In the tempo expression designer playback tab do you have "match playback to metronome marking text" checked? If so that should work no matter what is muted or soloed and whether viewing the score or part, even though only the top staff of the score appears in scroll view. The tempo mark should be p...

graphic artifact glitch
Occasionally an upside-down horizontal single-ended bracket will appear in the score. I think it may occur when I've been working with smart shapes. It cannot be deleted and if I minimize Finale it even appears on the desktop or other programs. Closing Finale will cure the issue, but I'm curious if ...

Re: minor saving as MIDI question
You can import MusicXML into Logic, which contains much more musical data than MIDI. My understanding is that MusicXML is a text format to share sheet music, and which doesn't retain musical playback characteristics. To retain Human Playback characteristics for use in a DAW the file would need to b...

Re: Export/import XML?
XML is a text format, so any midi information is stripped out. I export/import when I'm opening an old file that won't play nice with HP.

Re: Can't save
Before you refresh your preferences have you tried saving to a folder other than the desktop? Have you tried "save as" with a different name? It sounds more like a Windows issue, assuming your OS is Windows.

au contraire. Right-click the graphic and select "Edit Graphics Attributes." Uncheck the "link to file" box and the image will be embedded. It will only be visible in page view, however, not scroll view.

Re: staff names
In your file the piano staves are already united as a group. In that case just right-click (Windows) on the handle of the top of the brace and select "Edit group attributes." In the full and abbreviated name places click "edit" and enter the names, then click "ok." The group name will appear centere...

Re: how to get Finale to 'see' vienna ensemble?
I had the same problem when I transitioned to iLok, and I actually can't remember exactly how I overcame it. Presumably the problem occurs when you open an existing file? Do you have the HP preferences set to the Vienna techniques? I recently received a file that would only display SmartSynth in the...

Incompatibility of Finale Maestro with older Finale versions
I'm pretty sure this has been raised previously but I couldn't find anything in a search. My friend has PrintMusic. I sent him a Finale 27 file that uses the Finale Maestro font, and it had the usual garbled characters. It was a simple two measure music example so I solved the problem by recreating ...

Re: Play layer 1 on first pass, layer 2 on second
Mike, For me the attached Finale document (v26 format) plays back as desired. In the Instrument List I have set Layer 1 to Channel 1, and Layer 2 to Channel 2. But you have probably been doing exactly that for a very long time, in all your Finale documents. Why doesn't seem to work when VST is used?

Re: Play layer 1 on first pass, layer 2 on second
A forum search turned up using expressions with "play on pass x and setting the transposition either to 127 or 0 to not play or play, respectively. I experimented and couldn't get it to work with separate layers on the same staff, even if they were set to separate channels and the expression assignm...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed
I have no real problem with the online manual, although I admit I keep cheat sheets for notation and playback, respectively. These include those things that crop up infrequently that I just can't remember. The manual could use search parameters to minimize having to peck one's way through the multip...

Re: moving Speedy rests
I read your posting and am happy to know that. Usually, dragging left or right is not desirable; as you say, Shift will constrain it to either horizontal or vertical, but I find it's easy to start the wrong way, in which case you have to start over. The Simple arrow keys are lass fraught. I have my...

It's just as easy to move a rest in speedy entry but apparently no one read my post. Drag the rest into position (hold down the left mouse butt...

You need to click-drag the rests (hold the left mouse button down and drag the rest into the position you want). If you just click the rest it will turn into a note.

Re: file locked
I'm on a Mac. Did you mean "get info", then permissions "read and write?" I don't see anything called properties. Open file manager, locate the file, right-click and select "properties." Is the file marked "read only"? If so, uncheck it, click "apply" and close. Then try saving the file. If that do...
