Try using non-SMUFL fonts. If he was able to open your files without issue and now he can't it is likely the version of his software doesn't recognize Finale's new font set.

Interesting, I had never heard about them. It says to contact their support so that is what I would do.

By The Way: The plug-in name is “JW Measure Numbers” (not “Easy Measure Numbers”). Easy Mesure Numbers is/was Finale's plug-in but I did not see it in 27's menu. Somewhat surprised? You may want to try the "Easy Measure Numbers plug-in".

I'm on Windows but did you try VST Banks and Effects to see if the volume is turned up. For some reason on WIndows machines Finale turns the volume to zero sometimes. Why? I have no idea. Also, try Reassign Playback Sounds. All in the MIDI/Audio tool drop down.

I have my version 97 which was the first year put on Finale. Plus all the rest.

You probably need to do a clean install. Even when you do an uninstall Windows will leave trash behind. On a Win 10 machine and a good install all the plug-ins will work. I am guessing your installs are not clean. The problem comes when you uninstall, Windows might not completely remove everything. ...

Two things. One you need to know where Finale is storing the plug-ins. Depends on whether you are on a Mac or Windows machine. And, two, you need to make sure you d/l the correct version. Some have gotten the older 32-bit plug-ins for Finale 27.

It was to never use minor mode key signatures. Instead, use major mode showing the correct signature for minor keys I don't know why Finale asks whether you want major or minor. Yeah, I don't think Save Preferences even works or Finale likes to ignore it a lot. But if you save your file, it should reopen it the same way. It does not?
You might try the ole standby by and trash your Finale preference and set it up again.

The problem is, I don't know of any software that will open a mus or musx file except Finale. Do you?
Not to say there isn't but I never heard about it. That almost leaves you to the demo Finale solution as the single option.

I would also check for an overfilled measure. It isn't clear exactly how Finale displays over filled measures.
It is easy to think or look like you are in a certain measure when you are not. Check to the left.

If you delete a measure it will delete all layers so that's not the cause.

Try selecting the uncompressed XML version.
You may also want to downgrade the XML to v3. The Sibelius may be an older version that does not support v4.
You must go to XML "Import" to change the "Export" preferences.

Can you copy the C and G into the offending E bar? You might try clear all staff styles. Insert a new measure then delete the offending measure and see if it allows layer 2.
