Re: Suggestions for new desktop PC setup?
I have to replace an old PC (about 6 years old) for which parts are no longer available (I'll replace it when it dies.) I have been looking at an HP OMEN 30 with lots of stuff, 65g memory (the largest available and biggest additional cost), an 11th gen I7 (or i9?) cheep (next to the cheapest), 1tb S...

Re: How to do Baroque-style flourishes
There are quite a few net resources and even more in libraries. (One of my Mom's friends during college did her doctoral dissertation on baroque ornamentation.) https://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory23.htm https://www.docwallacemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Journal-of-the-American-Viola-Societ...

Re: Figured Bass Analysis
I cannot find the reference for the sequence I-V6-vi-I64-IV-I63-ii6-V. I did find several discussions of the sequence I-V6-vi-I63-IV... which is a Gallant schema. I don't remember where I heard the first version (but it looks a bit like a passing 64 anyway.) Pachelbel used iii but I could not make i...

Re: Creating Rubato for playback
A quick but not necessarily repeatable method is to use the rubato in the Human Playback. It can be set from 0 to 100%. HP uses some algorithm to assign the exact rubato. I've used a bit now and then but you have little control (except for the overall amount.)

Re: Finale Won't Playback
There are several sub-settings under MIDI/AUDIO that have caused me some trouble when I get new hardware (though the hardware is ostensibly compatible.) Under MIDI/AUDIO is Device Setup and under that is Audio Setup. My newest computer knows which type of headphone I have plugged in (BOSE earphone o...

Re: Need some pointers for mixing in Finale
I prefer to do the following which I posted somewhere else and can't remember the location. For almost everything with Finale: Copy the HP settings you like to Custom (I mostly use Latin or Romantic or Baroque). Then on the upper "Interpret" I set everything but "final bars." On the lower "advanced"...

I've done this before but I think it's "D.S. al Fine" instead of al Signo. It should work. Finale has all the parts.

Re: Finale sounds
For "world" percussion, the Garritan World Instruments isn't bad. I use the Cuban stuff a lot (bongs, congas, etc.) There is a problem with matching volumes across libraries but I fix that in the Aria player. (I also use the presets in the convolution reverb so I don't have to think or experiment. I...

Re: Direct playback OK, but saved audio files stutter
I usually just export .wav files (supposedly lossless), then convert into .mp3 files using Audacity (which now includes Lame). This has worked pretty well.

Re: re-authorization
I've had ths before but I don't know why. However, the first fix it to just re-authorize through the internet. If that doesn't work, try phoning Make Music (or even send a message at their web site.) They can usually re-authorize immediately.

There's Finale Notepad but I don't know how well it's kept up. One can also export Music-XML and read with anything that can read XML.

Re: Studio View Volume Setting
HP is "Human Playback" which (among other things) reacts to things like dynamics (f,ff,mp,etc.) or slurs or staccato marks. GPO5 is the Garritan Personal Orchestra (some of these instruments are included in the GIFF, Garritan Instruments for Finale, which is included with Finale.) GPO5 has several p...

I'm still getting volume markings to work. (At least ff to mp back to ff worked.)
I am using the Garritan Steinway D from GPO5 and HP.

Re: Survey: Finale interface
I would like major changes with a major caveat (as opposed to a minor or diminished caveat): capabilities are to be added; errors fixed; general approach kept the same. Things (even those not affecting my work) that help are fine (ties between non-consecutive notes, better chord symbols), etc. Perso...

You have to have both the Aria Player and Aria Engine to used Garritan Instruments. I don't know why your player is displayed strangely.

Re: Trumpets sound flat
I've had the volume problem myself. I use gogreen's suggestion; I put instruments into different banks. I first started doing this in order to use different reverbs. The "Controls" settings also differ between instruments.
I've never had the pitch problem though. (Maybe later.)

Re: Eighth note
There are two ways. One is to set the time signature to something that behaves as you want it to do (and display the nominal time signature). I often write with 4/4 displayed but with 8/8 as the "real" signature to get the eighth notes connected. Another method is to use the backslash key to connect...

Re: How are the VST Banks & Effects organized?
For templates, I just take file for which I like the settings; delete all (or most) of the notes; then save the file under a name I can remember. Later I can just edit that file which will even include the loaded libraries. I've got a bunch of files with nice settings but poor music; they will get o...

Re: How are the VST Banks & Effects organized?
My experience has been that when I use GPO5 or JABB3 or GWI (the main one I use), most instruments get put into a single bank (usually bank 1) sequentially into channels. Sometimes, percussion instruments will go into channel 10. I use the Score Manager to do assignments now. I let the system put st...

New Finale 26.3.1.520 Available
I'm downloading this tonight. I'll report if it affects (+ or - ) anything I do. I have typing problems that affect a few others; it occurs in Ver25 and Ver26. It did happen right after some Microsoft update so I can't really isolate it. It happens on all my files but MM and others cannot recreate i...

I like that one. I could even sight-read it. (I did something similar to make a harp montuno but I didn't notice that one could do it here.) To me, this is the best solution (so far).

Re: Repeat entries
I like that idea with repeat entries. What I tend to use is just copying a measure (or measures or stack or stacks), inserting or pasting into an empty slot; then edit. It's useful for montunos in a Latin style.

Re: Advice for Best Orchestra for Finale
Seems like I have a bit of work to do to get NP3 to work. I tried it on the contest piece in one of the composer forums (I don't remember which is singular and which is plural). Just doing what's on NP3's site (put NP3 at the top, reset HP to standard, defaults, reassign sounds) doesn't yield much r...
