Old files will not open in Finale 27
I have some files dating to c. 1995. When I try to open them in v. 27 the program either displays “Finale has encountered an error…” or else summarily shuts down. I can open the files in v. 26 on the same PC, and they will open in v. 27 on my backup PC. Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciat...

Re: graphics disappearing
I don't see this problem in Windows, and assuming it's not a Mac-only issue I wonder if it's related to the type of vector graphic file being used? I had no problem with .pdf and .wmf vector files, but when I tried to place an .eps file a "file not supported" pop-up appeared.

Re: Is there a shortcut key or macro to jump to next stave
In Windows it's shift + down arrow (or shift + up arrow to go up a stave). If you click Speedy on the task bar it displays Speedy edit and navigation command sub menus.

Re: Exported Audio Files are out of sync
One suggestion might be to try using the midi tool (Midi Tool/Edit Tempo. Highlight the measure stacks that are to be timed. Select Midi Tool/Fit to Time). When finished copy the midi to the other staves so everything should sync. Another approach which might be preferred is to export a midi file an...

Re: Instrument playback volume low in the last three bars
Thanks for the good suggestion. I created and placed the expression at the point where the volume drops. Below are the steps I used that fail. 1. Expression Tool -> double-click at the point where the volume drops -> choose, say, "Miscellaneous." 2. Create Misc. Expression -> type in a label, such ...

Re: Volume Adjustment
I've experimented with getting more control over playback by exporting a Finale midi file with its HP to a DAW and then having the DAW control Finale's playback of 3rd party VSTs. Having used trial versions of Reaper, Samplitude, and now Cubase, the learning curve is not easy. The initial problem in...

Re: Instrument playback volume low in the last three bars
There might be a better way to accomplish what you want, but if it's only the last three bars you could insert a "Human Playback off" expression. Create a new miscellaneous expression with the font 'hidden' and for playback select "HP off." Create an "HP on" expression if needed. These affect only t...

Re: palettes appearance in Finale 27
I see what you mean, but I don't find the shading so dark that the icon is hard to read, although Windows Finale icons are different from Apple's. If you're using a laptop perhaps the small screen size is a factor in legibility? Also, I use function keys to select the most-used tools so I don't ofte...

Marimba grace note playback bug?
I was doing a playback midi file for a friend. One of the instruments – a marimba – does not play grace notes at the correct pitch. Garritan (and even my Vienna Symphony sample as well) only play the grace note at the same pitch as the successor note. If I created a blank staff without naming it, th...

Re: Volume Adjustment
You don't state whether you use Windows or Mac, but the movement's volume can be adjusted within Finale by Midi/Audio menu/VST Banks and Effects and lowering the master volume (assuming you're not using outboard midi). Alternately you can lower the volume through Finale's mixer. You don't need to in...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1
The blog seem like a lot of gabble. The music sharing feature they’re trumpeting seems to me a marketing strategy to sell Finale to music educators; this might be an attempt to proselytize young music students to use Finale. If that’s the case it reminds me of a fellow commuter, many years ago, tell...

Re: Finale (27) & Windows 11
There are many articles posted by tech sites about Windows 11. I don't believe MS will upgrade if the PC doesn't meet its technical specs, although there are workarounds for the desperate. So far I only see a few things that benefit non-office environments. The biggest caveat when upgrading a Window...

Re: Finale does not play the music written in the score
I have experienced the issue in every version, up to 26.3. What works for me are the following steps. 1. MIDI/Audio (upper text menu) -> Re-assign Playback Sounds. 2. Score Manager -> re-select any instrument Finale might have changed. #1 may work if you're solely using Garritan samples. If you hav...

Re: Simple way to extend length of fermata?
I don't think there's a "simple way," but I created a text expression ("CTL + U" for fermata) with the playback tempo set to a slower tempo and that worked. You'd need to put a hidden tempo change after to restore the original tempo.

Is it possible to combine two separate Instrument Techniques?
I searched Finale's help and this forum. I have two separate sets of instrument techniques - one for Garritan that comes pre-installed, and a separate one for third-party sample sets. I can select one or the other, but don't see any way of combining both sets into a single set of preferences other t...

Re: 27 DEMO wrecks Existing F26
I'm not sure I follow. It's easy enough to get the third-party instrument techniques from 26 to 27. I just open in 27 a 26 document that has the techniques, save the document, and they will then be global. Having done that, I can choose either the third-party VST or the Garritan set, but not both. I...

Re: 27 DEMO wrecks Existing F26
I upgraded from 26 Monday, and F keys I had assigned were gone from 26 as was the one custom Finale script I had created. I had to add the VST directories to 27, not a biggie. Also, F27 didn't carry over my HP instrument techniques. Perhaps because F27 seems to have a redesigned set of Garritan inst...

Re: Using Finale w/DAW, CineStrings or the like
If you check the websites for the sample libraries that interest you they provide minimum specifications. I still operate Windows 8.1, 16 GB ram and have no problem. My operating system is on an SSD, and my sample libraries are on a separate SSD. I don't know if this is still the case, but at one ti...

Re: Start and end "time buffer" size
Are you exporting with MIDI to mp3 or VST to wav? I usually do the latter, then open the file in Audacity and trim the ends if needed, Normalize, then export as mp3. Zuill I normally use Adobe Audition; Audacity rarely, but the "normalize" feature seems to work the same. Just a caveat: automaticall...

Re: Using Finale w/DAW, CineStrings or the like
Since I had the same thought about using a DAW to fine-tune the playback, I’ve experimented with both Reaper (free two month trial, then $60) and Magix Samplitude (free one month trial then $100+ depending which version). Each came with an issue that I had to solve by finding the information outside...
