OT question, regarding dedications
Is it unusual for a single movement of a multi-movement work to be dedicated to someone, while the rest of the work is dedicated to a second person? The middle movement of my violin concerto was begun as a stand-alone piece, and as such I had dedicated it to someone very important in my life. Howeve...

Re: Is it correct to notate like this?
I am going on the presumption that the original poster wants the 1st G to go up to the E, and the D# to go down to the G in the next measure. Ergo, voice crossing, common enough in orchestral writing. Without the larger context of the passage it's impossible to say whether in this case the voice cro...

Re: Is it correct to notate like this?
As RMK said, tied half note to dotted quarter for layer two. I I wouldn't alter the stem direction since it obviously shows a voice crossing, however, I would move the whole note in the first measure away from the stem of the layer 2 note to make it clear that it is not sharing that stem. Move it on...

Re: A single hairpin can be both decres. or cresc.
you know what saves even more time? simply defining a keyboard shortcut for cresc/decresc in the Smartshapes menu. I use C and D respectively. no need to drag a decresc in the opposite direction to create a crescendo. Just activate the Smarshapes tool, select the cresc, hairpin icon, then press Shif...

Re: Save as PDF an instrumental part with divisi
Is this a Mac-only issue? I've just finished printing out the materials for a violin concerto that has multiple instances of divisi staves for the strings, and by defining the parts as containing both staves (or more depending), I can simply choose which "part" I want to print and it prints the whol...

simpler would just be to redefine the number for that MM rest as something off the page, no?

Re: solo cadenza in orchestra parts question
I did try looking at some concerti, but none of them had any time signature changes during the cadenza.. they had unmeasured measures, which still appear as 4/4 (or whatever the concerto is in).
but thank-you, I will do this because damn it will save on page turns!!

solo cadenza in orchestra parts question
I have a question to which I can't seem to find an answer, or at least, I can't seem to word it properly to get a response from google. I have a score for a violin concerto. The cadenza changes time signatures constantly. This means that the rests in the orchestral parts also reflect these constant ...

Re: How to Create a Cue Staff
Thank you for the responses. I think I understand and will begin working on it. One further question: do I add the cue staff to the score itself and then hide it, or do I add it just to the part alone? Thanks! To the score. If this is what I think it is (an alternate line, as one sometimes finds in...

Re: How to Create a Cue Staff
for a cue staff (one that shows alternate performance options, for example): add a staff to the score, resize only that staff to 75% (or 65% if you prefer a bit smaller). add your notes where needed. then hide the staff where it is not needed (you can select the page layout tool IIRC and then click ...

Re: Maybe silly question
thank-you all for the awesome feedback. it's hard sometimes to make decisions of this sort... there's always the fear that some musicians might be offended at being treated like children (except I've noticed a distinct "childlike" trend among a certain level of orchestral musicians). I will go the "...

Maybe silly question
The situation: a concerto, with a repeated, and modulating, orchestral phrase with a brief interjection by the soloist between repetitions. The orchestra phrase has to be molto espr. (the solo interjection sort of comes "out of the fog, to shine briefly) Now, normally, I'd place an "espr." marking a...

Re: OT: score size
all my conductor scores are 11x14, and I've gotten nothing but compliments from the conductors working from my scores.
a conductor's music stand is always larger than musicians' stands.
all my orchestra parts are 9x12.

Re: O/T A notation question
thank-you Zuill. It's a double stop on violins, so I'll go with the 2nd instance. It has to be clear that the bottom note is held in one bow stroke. an O/T to my O/T... it's related though not to this piece. let's say there was a similar situation with double stops and some repeated notes, where you...

O/T A notation question
I'm curious how one should place the slur for this grace note.
The bottom note is tied to the main note, and placing a slur at the bottom looks odd.

Re: New upgrade to Finale.
I bought a new car, from this completely new company. It's really cool, they say it will do ALL of this really cool stuff. It cost me $51,000. I did have to wait 2 months for their first "upgrade" though, they added the left front and right rear wheels. But the car is SO much better than my former c...
