Re: Couple of questions

If there are just two layers sharing the same rhythm, you can add an extra, temporary staff, 'split from layers' to the extra staff and then 'merge' the contents of the two staves into the regular one. With different rhythms, and with more than two layers, though, I fear it would be impossible or to...

Re: Couple of questions

So for test, i tried to move all the voices from layer 2 to layer 1 in bar 1 using JW staff polyphony but it moves only the bass line, how to make it work with the top staff layer 2 as well? The second measure looks just fine, I think. I don't think moving layers is the right thing to do in the fir...

Re: Couple of questions

Of course there's nothing wrong with two layers in the left hand of the example. I would say both notations are pretty standard for piano.

Re: Couple of questions

It's just the lowest voice that's tied. Simpler without layers was my point.

Re: Couple of questions

As this seems to be piano music, it may be written more pianistically, without demonstrating the individual voices as in much choral music. Neater-looking and easier to read. Different layers are needed only when the 'voices' have different rhythms, as in ex. 3. (I just assumed the key signature was...

Re: Random lines under one measure of lyrics (not lyric extensions)

If you would use layers consequently in this way, layer one for soprano, layer two for alto, and assign lyrics to layer one only, you should be safe to go: Rearranging layers to fit lyrics.JPG I'm afraid you'll have to rewrite it all, but then it would look much better. (Also the lower staff should ...

Re: Random lines under one measure of lyrics (not lyric extensions)

I think the lines in the beginning of the second system really are word extensions. In Lyrics Tool, select Word extensions, select the box at the end of the line and press delete. At least it did it for me. About the misplaced hyphens: When I encounter this, I usually rewrite all the lyrics from aft...

And while we're at it: Tempo marks and tempo alterations should show over the same staves in the score.

Re: Couple of questions

2. How to create keyboard shortcut to call the simple entry tool and any other tool for that matter? This was asked in the first post on this thread. Possibly the innate feature to program keys for tools was overlooked. Anyway, I didn't notice it was mentioned. Select a tool, press Shift+any of fun...

Re: Divisi parts with different movement set ups

Maybe motet's example told you what you need, but here's another one from a 1st violin part, three or two staves showing (in other places just one):

Re: Divisi parts with different movement set ups

Do you want the solo violin to have that role throughout a movement, or is it just temporarily? If the latter you may use a separate staff for the solo violin and show it when it's active and hide it when it's not. Adding 'gli altri' for the rest of the first violins when the soloist is playing, and...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

I use the Special Tools in Finale all the time, when the need to adjust a beam fx appears. I know there are settings for beams etc. in both programs, but I would appreciate some comment on how these manual adjustments work in Dorico.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Full scores of Prokofiev seemed to be published in C while those of Shostakovich are transposing: from the same publisher. Why, I wonder? Then, neither P. nor S. wrote exactly atonal music. Possibly Prokofiev for some reason wanted to be more 'modern' in his notation, more Western-oriented as he wa...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Nice to hear that you know about Modus Novus! My guess is that scores in C have been favoured along with atonal music. In transposing scores of the old days, I've found that I'm half-reading, half-guessing the notes, based on traditional harmony. When there's no tonal harmony, how could you 'guess' ...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Most of the contemporary composers I've worked with prefer a score in C. I know that 12-tone composers in the mid-20th century did this, but I'm surprised that's still the case. Is there are reason other than not having to read transpositions? Or is that a musical skill that's falling by the waysid...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Condensing considers each phrase, and lays out the music accordingly. So unison phrases, homorhythmic phrases, and different rhythms will each be displayed differently, with labels and stem directions as defined in options. Thanks for your extensive reply, BuonTempi. I'm not sure that I followed yo...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

I use only Finale but I would like this: Condensing (Please see the example in the previous post.) This is really impressing, and something I would've liked to use. One question: Most of the contemporary composers I've worked with prefer a score in C. What happens when the score and parts have diff...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

the two things I AM missing with Dorico: cut-away staves, and the ability to name my 1st and 2nd violins as I want them. The former is, I think, a projected eventual feature in Dorico, and the latter supposedly will be arriving with the next upgrade in December. How impossible are cut-away staves i...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

When you want to do something that Dorico doesn't cater for, then you have to start getting creative, and can hit a brick wall. Finale can always accommodate any request, but the price of freedom is eternal tedium. Hm. I've heard somewhere that one of the prerequisites for becoming creative i...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Dorico automatically spaces all the music. If you want to make manual adjustments, then you can make those, and they will stay in place. They won't get over-ridden by the program, unless you remove the adjustments. Sounds good! Just a question, how do you remove the adjustments? Is there a 'reset' ...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

I take it Dorico has an equivalent to Finale's Automatic Music Spacing. Can you turn it off if you want to make manual adjustments not over-ridden by the program? And, if so, is the setting document or program specific? I really appreciate this thread. It's so much easier to learn something of the p...

Re: dead horse

The only hope is that Finale is bought by a serious, competent and financially capable player in this market. The other hope for Finale is that Dorico continues down the path of exclusion rather than inclusion, as in, "Why would you want to do that ?" Very good point, John. I remember when Finale w...

I knew I wasn't making this up, but since no one seemed to have noticed the problem a few posts earlier, I thought it best to drop the subject.
