FWIW, you can certainly use Speedy without your midi keyboard. Under the Speedy pulldown menu uncheck "use midi keyboard for input". Now you just enter everything from the computer keyboard.

Re: Trying to install BBCSO VST but Finale 2014 does not read it.
I don't have any tips for you other than to say it works for me. But my setup is different from yours. I'm on a Mac and I'm using Finale 26. I've uninstalled Finale 14.5. I've installed the full version of BBCSO, not the Discovery version. I installed BBCSO on an external SSD drive. Finale scanned f...

Re: Human Playback Xsample Contemporary Solo Strings
Going to the Xsample website, then the "download" page, I don't see any mention of Finale under the Contemporary Solo Strings. There is a Finale Human Playback Preference file under notation tools, but it doesn't specifically mention what library that covers. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Re: Softening string attacks?
You need to remember that you're dealing with computer playback, not real players who can breathe life into a melody. I see a few options. 1. Accept the playback as is, using the mp3 for proofing purposes or to make a rough demo recording. 2. Do you have NotePerformer? This is a step up from Garrita...

Re: Need some pointers for mixing in Finale
I don't have any steps to suggest, just "trust your ears". And remember that Finale is a notation program, not a DAW, so don't expect perfection. Set your levels the best you can. With reverb, the advice I got once, was to adding reverb, then once you start noticing the reverb, back off of it slight...

Re: Sound help
... Just remember to choose the same reverb settings in every bank! A caveat first, I do my fine tuning for playback in a DAW, not Finale. But I disagree with this statement. Reverb settings should reflect the seating positioning of the instruments. Basically, in an orchestral piece for instance, t...

Creative use of Finale
I have been asked to work on a project that has some unusual notation. I remember seeing an example of Finale in the past where it was a staff that was circular. One of the things that I might need to do is to create concentric circles from a staff. Another one is where a staff starts out normally, ...

In addition to the ideas presented here, I would use two trumpets from different libraries. One from Garritan and one from another developer.

Also consider, do you collaborate with other Finale users? If so, staying on the same platform makes life easier if custom fonts are being used. I engrave for US publishers on learned early on that Mac was vital for doing this work. If this is all for your personal use, then use what you like. I swi...

Re: trill tie
I like Ngrossingink's text clarification of no trill. But instead of a quintuplet, wouldn't just a G# whole note trill sound the same? I mean if the first beat is written out as a tuplet, why not write out the whole measure that way and avoid using a trill indication at all?

Here's a file, FInale 26. I stripped out enough of it to keep the composer happy. The problematic measure is on page 2, system 5. I'm curious as to what you can find.

Re: position smart shape
No independent time signatures here. Auto update layout is on, auto-music spacing is off. So the measure width is not changing. I tried unchecking "snap to beats" in the smart shape tool. Yet it keeps snapping back to beat 1. When I delete this smart shape and re-enter it, making sure I start this s...

position smart shape
I've got a custom smart shape which I'm having problems positioning. It's a thick horizontal line with an arrow. In the screen shot it starts on the barline. But I want it to start before the barline, touching the box. When I manually drag it into the position I want, then when I do an update layout...

Re: Accidentals carrying through the measure
I find it strange that there are two schools of thought on this. I just got back a list of corrections the composer wants me to make, and he has asked for all of the "extra" accidentals (which are in a different octave) be removed. It's a very long piece, he took the time to go through the score and...

Accidentals carrying through the measure
This isn't a Finale question, but notation. I've been dealing with different composers who have different opinions about accidentals carrying through the measure. One composer is adamant that the accidental only affect subsequent notes on that specific pitch in that specific octave. The other compos...

Waiting for the Mac version here. But I do think some type of demo would be helpful in making a purchasing decision. My scores are set at a specific reduction, and often things don't fit. I need to cheat a little. Sometimes I nudge my dynamics to gain a little wiggle room. I had a score last week wh...

Re: change rests
Zuill, Show active layer worked, but in addition to consolidating the dotted quarter rests, it was changing some other rhythms that I didn't want changed. This is one of those things that I might spend an hour searching for the perfect shortcut, and if I had just started manually changing them, it w...

Re: change rests
Thank you all for replying. Nothing worked as I had hoped. Retranscribe correctly combined the rests into a single dotted quarter rest, but it also deleted any articulations that were attached to the notes. Rebar music also combined them correctly, but interfered entries in other layers. I had the s...

change rests
I've got a piece in 6/8, which is filled with a quarter rest then an eighth rest. I'd like to change them all to a dotted quarter. I thought there was a plugin that did this, but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Re: Can we extract score parts without loss of tempo changes
Hi Djard, I don't know what DAW you use, (I use Logic), but the initial playback should be very close to FInale's playback. I'm guessing that when you saved to midi, the human playback didn't get included in that file. Also, make sure you load the same Garritan instruments into your DAw that you use...

Re: Can we extract score parts without loss of tempo changes
Yes, exactly what Harald said. You're only using half of your DAW's capabilities. For example, Finale assigns a specific numeric value to a dynamic, for example mf has a value of 75. That means that every mf in your score is exactly at the same level. That's not what happens with real players. There...

Re: Can we extract score parts without loss of tempo changes
Djard, Can you explain to me what is gained by taking a wav file from FInale and importing that into a DAW? IMO, the way to use a DAW is to take a export a midi file from Finale and use the DAW's midi editing tools to get the best playback possible. I view the Finale's human playback as a good start...
