Re: Adding instruments?

I'd assumed that was just not up-to-date. :D However: "We are aware of issues in Sonoma with Finale v27.3 with the ScoreManager that affects editing and adding instruments within the dialog." https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/16032757964439-macOS-14-Sonoma-and-Finale-Notation-Products ...

Adding instruments?

The "Add Instrument" button in the Score manager does nothing. Doesn't respond to a click at all. And didn't there used to be a menu item under Staff menu to add an instrument from the Setup Wizard? I've reset my preferences, to no avail. Possibly a Sonoma (MacOS 14) issue, as it works on my other M...

Re: Font issues in Finale 27

Which brings up a serious question I have: is Finale pretty much "end of lifed?" at this point? There's been no real development publicly or privately that I know of since that last update that mainly ported a few (not even a majority) of the much needed JW plugins. It's been 299 days since the las...

Re: a music app for writing music by hand

I don't want or need something that converts my scribblings to standard music notation. All I want is to be able to scratch out a few bars of a tune or a chord progression and be able to save it. I can read my own notation just fine and don't need it to be converted to some other form that will pro...

Re: "Create parenthesized accidentals using multiple characters"

Prior to the move to SMuFL, Finale would use one single character for accidentals in parentheses. E.g. the Maestro font has symbols for accidentals in parentheses, separate from the 'bare' accidentals. FinaleMaestro, the new SMuFL-compliant font, also uses single glyphs for parenthesised accidentals...

Re: Keyboard Maestro?

I've been using keyboard shortcuts for years, via the Mac Keyboard control panel > App Shortcuts. No problems. A couple of days ago, they stopped working. I went back to the control panel, and some were missing, some were rearranged, and some were there, but missing the trigger key. I reset them, w...

By your word ‘understand’ you mean playback - right?
I was mostly thinking of the ability to 'move up and down' through successive accidentals.

But yes, also playback and export of XML.

Re: Quarter tone accidentals

Finale does seem to have the capability to create custom key signatures (though the interface seems typical byzantine). Would this not be the best way? Even if you do create a suitable tonal system, does it 'understand' quarter tone accidentals, beyond just changing the character of a 'standard' acc...

Re: What monitors are you using for Finale?

What monitors are you all using for Finale? I had a cheap one at work that made the staff lines look all fuzzy. Do I really need to spend $1k on a monitor that has iMac resolution or are there better alternatives? On MacOS, the pixel density is crucial. If you use a display with a low pixel density...

Re: Contra Bass or Double Bass?

Anyone mentioned "bass viol", the granddaddy of them all? Also, Violone, and bass violin, although bass violin doesn't seem correct since I don't think the contrabass is part of the violin family. I always think it's funny that "Violoncello" means "Little Violone", and of course Violone mean "Big V...

Re: version for Apple silicon?

I'm more than a little dismayed to find that the OS plunked the app in the Trash for me saying "Finale.app is damaged and can't be opened." I had the same error when I migrated the contents of my old Mac onto my new one (including Finale). The OS will render an app 'damaged' if it is modified in an...

So the problem is with the iPhone (!) and Continuity Camera, whatever that is. It's basically using your iPhone as a webcam for your Mac. Here's MM's support page about the problem: https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/10852042413207 Ironically, I don't have an option for CC in my Settin...

About the only thing I can contribute is that Logic can import MusicXML, as well as MIDI; and you may find that one provides more useful/complete data than the other.

Re: favorite font for lyrics

The two main factors are: legibility at small sizes, and a relatively narrow width, to avoid the syllables affecting the note spacing. And, of course, it has to match (or complement) the font styles of your other text elements -- expressions, tempi, and "page furniture". Serif fonts are usually cons...

Re: Where does one buy older versions of finale?

My mistake, I meant that I am running on Sierra, 10.12.6 and I can't upgrade to a newer OSX because my computer is too old. System requirements state that V27 only works with 10.14 and newer. It is possible to install newer OS versions than supported, using third-party fixes. https://dortania.githu...

Re: Where does one buy older versions of finale?

Once a new version is released, they don't sell older versions on the site. It's always been this way, and I've never understood why. It's hard to justify selling something that you're not 'supporting', in terms of meaningful bug fixes and compatibility updates. And updating two version of Finale i...

Re: Where does one buy older versions of finale?

I have a mac that can't upgrade past osx 12.6, so it seems I cannot buy finale V27 which is osx 14 or later. You are confusing OS 10.14 (Mojave) with OS 14 (which is not released yet!!). MakeMusic's system requirements state that Finale 27.3 will run on Mojave (10.14), Catalina (10.15), Big Sur (11...

Since Time New Roman is possibly the most-used font and presuming that the problem occurs for every Mac user of Finale 27, why haven't there been more complaints about it? There's a lot of confused and confusing** information in that ZenDesk thread, and the link (which also includes Facebook tracking data) is dead. Everyone with this problem should let MM know that it needs fixed. Times is one of several fonts that for some reason, Apple has declared 'legacy': meaning...

Re: Hollywood Choirs w/Finale

It works well enough with Dorico, so it might work with Finale.

You have to type the syllables into the VST itself (and it has its own phoneme system). Then it just sounds each syllable to whatever MIDI notes come in. So playback always has to start from the beginning.

Since I'm dealing with big pieces, I've put a lot of time into customizing it for efficiency. With the aid of a third-party program called Bome's MIDI translator, I'm able to enter most everything note-wise without moving my hands from the MIDI keyboard. The lowest octave is for rhythm and a few ot...

One of my big issues with Musescore was with how it fills the measure with constantly changing rests, as you enter your notes. Thank you, but I know how many beats I’m using. I don’t need the help. And I couldn’t find a way to turn it off. Even Finale will fill the bar with the correct rests automa...

I tend to disagree. Finale, as is, runs pretty darn well for me and what I do. I think I am pretty typical in the way most folks use it. "It can't be like that for others because it's not like that for me" is a logical fallacy, at best. People have been complaining for decades about bugs in core Fi...
