Re: last breath

Computers are doing incredible things for us in all kinds of fields, and music/notation should be no exception. Sibelius is "using AI" to offer chord suggestions. https://www.scoringnotes.com/reviews/sibelius-2023-6/ Whether you like the concept or not, it's indicative of what software is capable of...

Re: Graphics disappear in Finale 27

However, working with EPS in version 27.3 is not seamless, because the program stubbornly refuses to import EPS graphics, but if their extension is renamed to PDF (as was found more than a year ago), everything falls into place. However, in order to render the vector elements properly, the file mus...

Re: last breath

Indeed. I really only use it for a handful of legacy projects that need regular updating. Finale is like a deranged ex-wife -- I've largely moved on, but I still look back fondly on our years together, and I hope she gets the support she needs to prosper. My recent attempts to communicate with MM ha...

Ha! :)

More telling, I think, is the fact that the Garritan libraries are once again excluded from the sale.

Re: last breath

It makes sense for MM to encourage as many users as possible onto the latest version and, who knows, perhaps to interest new customers. Despite all the fire sales, users are still coming to this forum and the Success Desk saying "I'm on 2012". Part of that is the lack of meaningful reasons to update...

Re: Fonts

You'll find some problems using SMuFL fonts in earlier versions: minim and semibreve rests will be too high; and the time sig numerals will be missing. Possibly flags will need their position adjusted, IIRC. We were beta-testing FinaleMaestro back in 2015, so not sure why it took six years to implem...

What's it plugged into? As far as I can see, MIDI pedals are just switches. Your keyboard will have sockets for whatever, or not.

Re: Graphics disappear in Finale 27

I prefer to embed graphics: the file size increases, but then I can move files about without losing the image in the document. I The main purpose/advantage of linking is that you can update the graphic image and have Finale refresh the new image. (Or, at least, that's what every other app that can ...

Re: Subsetting

The trouble is, that if it shows you a simplified list of commonly used commands, you'll then be tearing your hair out, trying to find the rarely used command that you need once in a while. Ask Sibelius users about the Ribbon scheme that did similar. Could Finale use a better, streamlined interface?...

Re: Purchase of Finale upgrade to 27 from 26

MM's answer: they recently 'took over' UK Sales from Alfred Music UK, which is why Alfred UK's site redirects you to MM.

MM is indeed registered for VAT in the UK, and they are going to add their VAT reg. number to their invoices.

Re: Purchase of Finale upgrade to 27 from 26

Although my understanding is poor, I'm not convinced that they need to charge VAT, unless they are actually registered for VAT in the UK and sending that money back, which seems like needless admin.

EDIT: Yes, previous invoices have not charged any Tax, so I think I'll query it.

Re: Purchase of Finale upgrade to 27 from 26

The price is $99, and you'll pay $19.80 in tax (20%), which is £93.62. Call it £95 with some kind of bank fee. Very few, if any, of the UK music shops seem to sell Finale, and those that do are selling New Purchases, rather than upgrades. The need to involve a third-party for digital products is min...

Re: No Sound Issue

It's probably not the document. Application settings won't be saved in the document. Nor will other audio/system configs.

You could try contacting MM, who will ask you to jump through the usual hoops, like reinstalling, regardless of whather it's necessary or not.

Re: Can someone recommend a plug-in for additional sounds?

Going from 26 to 27 should be fine (though there's the question of whether you shift existing projects to the SMuFL fonts or not..); but going from pre-26 to any later version will involve the change in slur/artic positioning, which "may cause contents to settle in transit".

Re: Can someone recommend a plug-in for additional sounds?

Can anybody recommend a soundfont plug-in compatible with Finale? Hmm. Finale's playback capabilities are largely unchanged in well over a decade, in what is a fast-moving area. Finale still only supports VST2 on Windows, which limits your choice, as many plug-ins are EOL-ing VST2. (E.g. Kontakt 7 ...

Yes, I get the error if I leave Finale open overnight. I can hold down Return, which presses "OK" on the error message about 35 times, until the errors are cleared. But it's probably best just to relaunch Finale.

There's this recent podcast on Scoring Notes about using Machine Learning in OMR (optical Music Recognition.) https://www.scoringnotes.com/podcast/from-zero-to-slice/ There are a fair few academic papers on the subject; and there are several OMR github projects, in various states, some of which use ...

Re: Style guides for choral music?

To follow up on what BuonTempi wrote about breath marks, I agree that they often require discussion and I have found that it saves rehearsal time to notate all breaths as rests. It requires a little extra time on my end but definitely saves time in rehearsal. Do you never change your mind...?...

Check MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > Audio Setup, and make sure that the input and output sources are correct.

Try trashing the user prefs.

Did you reinstall Finale, or just migrate?

Re: Style guides for choral music?

I concur with the recommendation of Elaine Gould's book, Behind Bars, which is a general and comprehensive guide to style and practice in notation. One thing I would say: Don't bother marking breaths in an edition. They will ignored and changed by most choir directors. Unless this is an edition sole...

The dial is probably responding to CC7 data coming from Finale. Set the volume in Finale, using the sliders for the VST or Audio Unit.

Re: Noteperformer 4 released

On a related matter: is GPO essentially dead? While I’ve used GPO5 for a few years now as it is certainly better than much of what comes with the built-in Garritan sounds for Finale, a lot of it pales in comparison with NP, as well as other sample libraries. No updates in a long time and frankly, N...

Re: Noteperformer 4 released

Indeed. NP4 essentially levels the playing field for audio output across the three major notation programs, allowing you to use some the big Pro sample libraries effortlessly. It's fair to say that Finale gets the largest benefit from this levelling, as Finale's MIDI Editor and other functions for c...
