Re: For the other Newbies

Actually you don't have to "Extract Parts" to individual .mus documents. You can edit and print individual parts inside the main score document, thanks to the Finale feature "linked parts". ...My next project is to determine HOW to "force" a limit of say 24 measures onto a page. So that I can INSIST...

Transposing Octaves in Notepad 2010

NotePad is a very lowcost program, but also very limited - Ya gets what ya pays fer! To transpose an octave down only a section of the document, the only way is to move the notes down with the Simple Entry Tool, one note at a time. There's a trick with the Key Signature Tool that allows you to trans...

Entering Chords in Finale 2010 Creates Distorted Measures

From your description it's my guess that the culprit is "Automatic Music Spacing".
Toggle it off, and you should get rid of the problem.

Also, since you are using complicated chord symbols, like F#7b9#5, it might be a good idea to have a big "default measure width" in Scroll View.

Transposing Chord Symbols

In Finale 2010 you can transpose music and chord symbols together by changing the key signature. If you want to transpose music and chord symbols without changing the key signature, then you must transpose music in one go, and transpose chord symbols in another go. You can't do both at the same time...

Layer Jargon, or

When all the notes have the same rhythmic value, and are in the same layer, we talk about them as a "chord". Finale (and also PrintMusic) obeys the general rule that you need a tie on each and every tied note, whereas you only need one slur to slur chords together. Ties are entered with the Simple E...

Here's an idea: 1) Set up the layout of the Flute part so that it only uses the upper 1/3 of the page. 2) Set up the layout of the Clarinet part so that it only uses the middle 1/3 of the page. 3) Set up the layout of the Alto Sax part so that it only uses the lower 1/3 of the page. Now you can prin...

...Is there a way to choose a single stave, and say "remove all chord symbols"?... I don't think PrintMusic has this feature. In the full Finale there is the option to "Clear Selected Items". Two ways to select a chord symbol: - Selection Tool. Double-click the chord symbol. - Chord Tool. Drag a re...

...what I have to enter to get the chord symbol to be correct is Eb/Eb, because Finale interprets it as V/V, but what I really need is more like Bb/Eb. It would be fine for me to lie to Finale to get my result, except that it screws with the playback badly, and I need a recording of the piece as we...

Fortissimo first then pianissimo in a repeat part

Sorry, SongWriter can't do that - Ya gets what ya pays fer!

Workaround:

Make a duplicate of the document, just for the playback.

In the duplicate "playback" document, write out the repeats with fortissimo the first time, and pianissimo the second time.

Here's a way: 1) Time Signature Tool. Make the real time signature 6/4, but click the button "Options" (or "More Choices") to expand the dialog box Time Signature, and make the time signature display as 2/4. Now all 4 staves will display a time signature of 2/4, but the real time signature is 6/4. 2...

moving notes in time

Finale always fills up a measure from the beginning of the measure and onwards. If you want one particular note moved from, say, beat 2 to beat 3, you should alter the measure-values before the note so that the measure contains values of 2 beats before the note instead of only values of 1 beat befor...

Re: Sliding Notes

...NotePad is time intensive. If I have a measure full of eighths, dotted eights, quarters, a half and a couple of sixteenths, it's "labor intensive" to go to the palette and choose the note "size/length" [each time for each note] that I want to move, BEFORE being able to "move it up or down"; espe...

Removing measure numbers

The culprit is probably that the measure number region is set to "Always Display on Top Staff", since "Always Display on Top Staff" overrides the Staff Tool settings. In the full Finale you can access the measure number regions (via the Measure Tool), but I don't know whether Allegro has access to e...

8va for 2nd repeat of a section

I don't know whether Allegro can do it, but in the full Finale you can get the desired playback effect with an expression. In the Expression Designer's chiclet "Playback", define the playback effect as "Transposition" (set to a value of 12 halfsteps), and define the expression to "Play Only on Pass"...

copy without erasing -- combine staves

This is already possible - at least in the full Finale:

Move the second part to Layer 2 (so that you have the first part in Layer 1, and the second part in Layer 2).

Toggle "Show Active Layer Only" on, and you can copy the active layer without erasing the other layers.

You can do it with the Speedy Entry Tool's feature"Voice 1/Voice 2":

1) Delete the sixteenth note D.

2) Switch to Voice 2, and enter an eighth note D.

To switch between Voices, hit the ' key.

See the attached document.
