Re: OT- Half rests in 3/4 time

The only case in which I would use a half rest in 3/4 time would be under a fermata. As far as I could find in her book, Gould does not even acknowledge this usage, which is legitimate, and rules out all half rests in 3/4.

Re: How to clean a Finale File

I am sure there are better answers, but all else having failed, you might make it a PDF, have scanning software like SmartScore recognize it, export that as an MusXML file, then import it back into Finale.

MIchel, as a card-carrying member of the anti-clutter movement, you might want to ditch the brackets for the triplets in your ossia example above.

The only hope is that Finale is bought by a serious, competent and financially capable player in this market.
The other hope for Finale is that Dorico continues down the path of exclusion rather than inclusion, as in, "Why would you want to do that?"

Re: Graphics programmes

I see the jaggies at high magnification on the monitor, BuonTempi. I was hoping to keep this project all in Finale. I may need to export everything into InDesign (or Affinity Publisher) as I usually do. The footnote examples are at 65% and the jaggies are barely visible even on very close inspection...

Re: Tying Notes

That's a good point, ttw. One is most accustomed to seeing double-dotted notes (and rests) in conjunction with a note or rest that completes it to add up to a non-dotted note value, for example, one often sees a double dotted eighth note or rest followed or preceded by a 32nd note or rest to equal a...

Re: Graphics programmes

What a wonderful tutorial, Wess. Thank you so much! I have Affinity Publisher but not Designer, which I will immediately purchase. Affinity Publisher was having some problems with importing PDFs at first. I assume that Designer is OK with PDF imports from Finale.

Re: Wandering text block

Thanks Ian and N, but both files originated as clean templates and I have been involved with them for months without issues. So two days ago I am proofreading one file (the fourth movement) and discover that a single footnote has mysteriously been replaced by a footnote from another file (the first ...

Wandering text block

I just opened a file of one movement of a piece and found that one of the text blocks had been replaced by a text block of the same size from another movement! No, I didn't accidentally move one to the other. Anyone else had this happen? I have seen weirdness of a similar kind with grpahics replacin...

OMG, Wess. That is brilliant! If I did a lot of that, I would get a subscription to Illustrator. Is it possible in any other program?

Re: Graphics programmes

Thanks again, Wess. That is invaluable help for adding graphics outside of Finale: just add the graphics in another layer. This would work for elements like newly added slurs etc. But if one modifies existing elements within a Finale file, such as ledger lines, wouldn't that have to be redone each t...

The only problem I can foresee is that after rehearsals I sometimes change things, or discover wrong notes; if there is a lot of graphic editing it would have to be redone.

Re: Graphics programmes

That's was enlightening, Wess. Thank you very much. I had never considered masking for places where ledger lines touched, since I assumed that it would be too time-consuming since the situation usually occurs in passages with many fast notes. What I was considering was taking a file into Photoshop (...

Re: Slashed grace notes not working

That's the problem with writing them out; you have to specify exact note values, and your really don't want to. Also, they begin to take over the page. I would suggest Ravel's solution. Little 32nd-notes with a footnote. If there are many, and they don't have slashes, some players will notice that a...

Re: Slashed grace notes not working

And slashing the grace notes per se won't tell the musician to play it on the beat. They'll probably just play a fast trill that starts before the beat. Since it has been the custom since the mid-19th century to play small notes before the beat, you will have to either write it out, or provide a foo...

Re: Graphics programmes

Its narrowing ledger lines for tight spaces that's the problem in Finale, since one can't do it for individual notes.

Re: Graphics programmes

I've read that some engravers add slurs that cannot be accomplished in Finale in a graphics program, and I've considered modifying the length of individual ledger lines in a graphics program, but so far I have always found ways within Finale to handle both.

Re: Graphics programmes

I am not sure if this is what is being discussed, but I frequently place Finale pdf's made with the graphics tool into other Finale documents (as examples in footnotes) and I've never had issues. And the whole page exports into InDesign and prints without issues.

Re: Tying Notes

Peter's double-dotted half note is a great solution, but if you are concerned that it might be too esoteric, most 7/8 meter divides into 3 + 4 or 4 + 3. So it would be more common to see a dotted quarter tied to a half note or vice versa to show this than what you have.

If you look carefully at the engraving by many well-known publishers you will see that the vertical line at the end is actually a dashed line with the dashes being the same length and distance apart as the ones in the horizontal part: example octave line.jpeg Note that example uses only 8 not 8va, t...

At this point, only the ability to create complex slur shapes and control the length of ledger lines would induce me to consider "going over to the Dorico side".
