Re: All piano?
The basic issue with this file is quite simple. There is a playback option which is unchecked which needs to be checked: Send patches to MIDI device on playback. That simple! (once one has been told what to look for). I wonder why it was unticked, as the default for a new file seems to be to have i...

Re: All piano?
FWIW I'm getting exactly the same phenomenon with this file as Mike. To double check, I started a new file with SoftSynth Piccolo through Audio Units and the new file sounded OK. I also noted that with Mike's file, if the instruments are changed from SoftSynth to Garritan (MIDI/Audio>Reassign Playba...

Re: Attach to Beats Remove
Some types of Smart Shape, including the dashed line in your example, only have the option of attaching to beats, others can be attached to either beats or notes, hence the menu choices. Have you tried selecting and then deselecting ‘Snap When Attaching to Beats’? The behaviour you are describing su...

Re: Tremolo playback issue
I created a hidden expression with the data numbers mentioned in this thread 144, 0, 127 which Finale has converted as shown in the screenshot. It did the job perfectly, but I have absolutely no idea what I was doing or why it should be these numbers (in either incarnation). I've read about the Play...

Re: Tremolo playback issue
This is not something I've normally encountered, but I notice that in the attached file the cello continues to play tremolo after it ceases to be indicated from bar 38 to the end, although earlier it changes correctly from tremolo back to normal. I wonder what is different, both within the piece, an...

Re: JW Validate / accidental mystery
I had an odd, but presumably related, problem the other day. I noticed a superfluous natural that I had difficulty removing. After an A flat earlier in the bar there were two A naturals, both preceded by the natural sign. I tried to remove the second natural by key-stroke ‘A’ (in Speedy), but it abs...

Have they perhaps migrated into the ‘miscellaneous’ category? Otherwise, import the relevant expression libraries from a newly created F 25 document into the old files. The process should go something like this. Create a new F 25 document. File menu>Save Library… Open the old file in F 25. File menu...

Re: OT: PDF utilities for MacOS
Thanks for this; I'll investigate properly later. Two passing questions: Mostly, I use B4 for full scores (some do need to be A3), which are then coil bound. B4 also seems a good size for shared string parts and percussion scores. Where mine are most often printed, it seems to be the marginally larg...

Re: Not exactly what I expected
It may be the bug with multiple regions and "don't include in measure numbering." The workaround is to change the program preference from "display defined measure numbers" to "display actual measure numbers." This was indeed the cause when it happened to me in May 2016. I've found the relevant thre...

Re: Not exactly what I expected
There is both a cause and a cure for this behaviour which I did experience once some time ago. Unfortunately I can't remember the details, but a Google search of the old forum may find something about it.Jay Emmes wrote:… …Finale removes a clef change earlier on. Not once: repeatedly.

Re: PrintMusic and NotePad for Mac discontinued!
The feeling I get from articles such as this https://eclecticlight.co/2017/09/10/last-week-on-my-mac-apfs-and-high-sierra-in-trouble/ , which I regard as a supremely well-informed source, is that it might be wise to delay up-dating computers currently running Sierra to the new OS for a month or two ...

Re: Not exactly what I expected
To what is the end point of the diminuendo anchored (see screenshot)?
To be definitive we would need to see the file itself. However, I suspect that if the anchor point is not to a place on the new page, the dim hairpin may not carry across in page view.

Re: Not exactly what I expected
What MakeMusic says to all this? That Finale isn't really meant to handle extensive editing. Take a moment to make that sink in. This essentially means that Finale isn't a suitable tool for composers (I wonder why they advertise it as such then? Flaunting with Ferneyhough as a Finale user then seem...

It seems to me that in more recent years, many publishers insert a blank page within a part in order to force good page turns. Of course, the page is always marked "This page left blank in order to facilitate page turns". Seems like a good idea. This is what I've done from time to time with an inse...

Re: Urgent! Gradual tempo decrease cancellation
Although it's not actually a problem once identified and turned off, the HP ‘final bars’ setting seems a bit whimsical. I can think of lots of pieces that get maniacally fast at the end, and at least as many whose final bars are in the same tempo as those immediately preceding them. Only some pieces...

I think the thing may be to subscribe to e-mails from the Finale blog. I'm fairly sure that's how I learnt about the special price for an upgrade to F 25 at the beginning of April. It was also mentioned on this forum.

Re: Any way to select the first beat only in a 2/4 measure?
I don't know if this is the official way, but on a Mac I can do the following. 1) Select the whole 2/4 bar. 2) With shift and right arrow extend the selection into the first beat (or partial beat) of the next bar. 3) Then use shift and left arrow so that the selection will reduce progressively to th...

On a MacBook the combination Shift-fn-Arrow (right or left) extends the selection to the end or beginning. Is there a 'fn' key on the Windows laptop (or something similar)?

Re: toggle between layer 1 and 2
On a Mac in F 25 (and probably earlier), if the Speedy Entry cursor is active, one can change layer by Shift-Up or Down Arrow. However, the usual way of changing layer when in any tool is Option (Alt)-Command-1, 2, 3 or 4 which seems fairly similar to the general way of changing layer on Windows.

Rather than use Finale's limited "backup" feature, I use an app called "Forever Save 2"… Thank you for reminding about this. Defaults on that'd be better off
It seems to me that a number of Finale's settings that are on by default might more sensibly be options to be chosen only if wanted, which by default are left off. Here's an example I've just encountered. I have F 25.4.1 on two computers, but have mostly been using it on only one of these until this...

One way might be to use a custom Smart Line with your choice of line thickness. Once the line is ‘designed’ and selected, double click and drag for the desired length &c.
