Smartmusic synth volume too low

Just setup my mom with Finale Notepad 2012. The smartmusic synth volume is ridiculously too low and I can't seem to find anyway to raise to useable levels. Switching the midi out to Miscrosoft midi synth has normal volume and sounds fine. Why is smartsynth so low volume and is there some way to correct it so that it will be proper level compared to everything else in windows?
I have already tried using your control panel and even with everything cranked there its unusably too low, plus all her desktop sounds were blowing our ear drums that way.
Anyone have a solution for this? I guess she'll just use the microsoft synth instead, since it has proper levels, but I doubt it sounds as good. oh well.
