Loss of playback in Notepad

Hi
This seems to be a reoccurring problem. initial symptoms scrolling curser has stopped working and no playback. Fiddled with MIDI settings and at least the sound came back although the sound is now of a tinny keyboard rather than a flute. Curser is still not working. Have tried de-installing and reinstalling to no effect
Notepad version 2011 and running on a windows 10
the programme has been running happily for about 6 months until this week. Any one have any ideas?
