How to create rests

It depends on the way you input music.

Here is one of the ways:

In the Simple Entry Tool - with the entry caret displaying - you can choose the rhythmic value on the NumPad:

8 = double whole
7 = whole
6 = half
5 = quarter
4 = eighth
3 = sixteenth
2 = thirtysecond

To enter a note, first choose the rhythmic value, then hit the corresponding letter key on the QWERTY keyboard:
G = G
F = F
E = E
D = D
&c.

To enter a rest, first choose the rhythmic value, then hit 0 on the NumPad.

Or in the Simple Entry Tool, ctrl+click to choose the desired note. When you press "r", the note itself turns into a rest of the same rhytmic value.

If you're using Speedy to enter notes, and you want, say, an 8th rest, first enter an 8th note (hit 4) anywhere (pitch doesn't matter) then hit Clear, and the 8th note turns into an 8th rest. Similarly for any other value: "Clear" transforms the note to a rest.

Isn't there a simple rest icon somewhere, as in other versions of Finale? Something you just click on, and it appears in the staff?

This multiple-step approach to creating rests, with corresponding numbers and clicking clear to transform it, etc. seems awfully complicated. With the number of rests in a typical piece, this must take forever!

Is there any easy, one-click way to do it? Some way to make a rest palette appear at the top, or something?

Yes, there is a Simple Rest palette, but it doesn't save you anything at all. You would still have to use the mouse to click on the rest, and then click in the score. If you are using the QWERTY keyboard and numberpad to enter the notes, you just hit the numberpad to select the duration, the same as you would for a note, and hit the 0 to enter a rest. It doesn't get any easier.

How are you entering the rest of your notes? Have you done the tutorials?

Thanks for the reply, miker.

How do I access the Simple Rest palette?

No, I haven't done the tutorials.

The way I place notes is by using the mouse to select the desired note, and then plotting it on the staff.

I have found the Simple Rest Palette: it is located in the Windows menu.

Thanks for your help.

Believe me, that's the toughest way to get it done! Read up on using the QWERTY keyboard and numberpad. Any time you lose by learning this method, you will make up on the first piece of music you input this way.

Okay, I'll look into switching methods, thanks miker.

I enter rests using the by clicking on the type of rest I want from the "Rests Palette" on the top of the page. OR... I also will you use my pointer to select the type of note I want from the "Notes Palette" and after I have entered it in the measure I want, I simply push the "r" button on the keyboard and it changes the note to the corresponding rest of the same value. I greatly hope that helps.

Please note that you are responding to a 7-year old post.

Also, NotePad has been discontinued!

Thank you very much for the information about the post. I should learn to read the dates. Thanks as well for letting me know about Finale Notepad being discontinued. However, it is still available for download. Thank you for your response to my posting.

Mike forgot to mention that is for Mac. There's still a Windows version.

I should have been more clear.

PrintMusic and NotePad for Mac have been discontinued.

PrintMusic and NotePad for Windows are still available, but will not be developed further than the current versions.
