what MIDI channel should the crotales be on?

Since it's percussion, I think it's channel 10.

That's not correct Mike. Crotales are tuned cymbals, usually in an octave set, and they're not included in the non-pitched sounds on Channel 10. It doesn't matter what channel number they're on, except not 10.

I would treat them just like a Glockenspiel, with the notes sounding two octaves higher than written on the treble clef. There isn't a MIDI patch for crotales and they're not included in GPO. Maybe patch 115 steel drums would be OK or you could experiment with some of the Japanese or ethnic instruments in the GM set.

what is the range of the crotales.

Search Google for crotales. I found references to two octaves, from middle C up, but there are a lot of references.
