Expression definition

Hey people,
I'm using Printmusic 2011a, and there's a repeat in my piece. I'm trying to make it so that some of the instruments only come in on the second time through the repeat. Everyone says to create a new expression and edit the playback so that the specific instruments are tacit the first pass, and play the second pass. The only problem is that I can't edit the playback for my expression, because there is no playback options menu. It's like the program doesn't have all the menus and abilities of everyone else's, even though it's exactly the same. It's really starting to frustrate me, and if anyone knows what's going on, I'd be very grateful!

You can't do that with PrintMusic. Expression definitions like that are in the full Finale, only. Sorry.

When I find m'self in that particular boat, I've generally wound up with two versions. One (with repeats) for printing, and one for playback where I don't use repeats, but copy/paste the repeated measures, then edit out the silenced instruments for the second, third or whatever subsequent pass (or vice-versa). In my rather limited experience, I've leared to write this sort of passage simply, do your copying, then add or subtract to the voicing as you progress forward after the fact.

It makes the playback piece a little larger, but that way you can at least still print it the way you prefer it to look.

Absolutely correct. That's the only way to deal with a number of issues like this.
