Is it possble to change the colour of notes on an individual basis?
I would like to be able to change selected notes to red for emphasis

No. You would have to export the file as a PDF, and make those changes in something like Illustrator. The full Finale will let you specify a color for notes of the same pitch, but you couldn't, for example, color a C red in one measure, and a D red in the next. PrintMusic can't do any of this.

Are useful technique is to add flats or sharps or double Saturday double sharps to the D in a different octave to assign a different color to it and then under documents options accidentals just erase all accidentals and just see the note heads different colors - it looks good but doesn’t sound good if you play it back
