How do you save/export a file as an MP3?

Does PrintMusic allow you to save/export a composition as an MP3?

I tried the various options in the File menu, but somehow it just froze on me: got maybe 40% of the way through the exporting process, then wouldn't finish.

Meanwhile, exporting as a MIDI file produces a very canned and unrealistic piano sound, presumably because it opens in Windows Media Player by default. I'm hoping that MP3, being compatible with iTunes, will sound better.

Yes; File>Export to Audio File.

If this isn't working correctly, try restarting your computer. If you still have a problem, is it all files, or one particular file?

Miker, your last remark helped me figure out the problem.

Turns out the file was too large, because I had programmed it to repeat 50 times (so I could listen to it continuously, without having to cue it up each time).

Once I removed the repeat symbol, I was able to export as a .wav file.

Thanks!

josefern,

Are you using GPO or SmartMusic SoftSynth?

I don't think that Finale can export GPO playback as MP3.

But you can export SmartMusic SoftSynth playback as MP3.

You can export GPO playback as WAV.
You can convert the WAV file to MP3 with third party software.

Hi, dear Fellow Mac users writing/composing in Finale '14

to get som sing-in examples of a composition (3/4-part SAB-/-SATB vocal ensemble)
I've got some problems converting the Finale files onto readable/replayable MP3 files.
I can choose the following files in 'Export file onto.....' :
Audio file-....
EPUB
Finale 2012
MIDI file
Music XML
Smartmusic ®
Which one is usefull?
Thanks in forward

You should choose the menu item “Audio file…”.

Depending on the Finale playback the Audio file options may or may not include the audio format .MP3 - you may only get the option of .AIFF format.
But do not worry!
You can use iTunes to convert .AIFF to .MP3.

Not usually on a Mac. Export as AIFF then convert to MP3 in iTunes, as suggested by Peter Thomsen, is normally the way to do it on a Mac.

David,
I export as MP3 all the time. As has been said, you need to have Finale set to Play through MIDI.

Is there a way to set the default file export type to MP3 instead of aiff?

No. Or at least, none that I've been able to discover. I recently became a Keyboard Maestro user, and after a lot of mistakes, I finally made a shortcut for the cursor to click on the Type drop down, change to MP3, and Save, all with one hot key. Woo hoo! It's saved me a lot of time.

Same here! But I could not get past the --> Export --> Audio file… step. I have no idea how to reach the Type drop-down option.

Does Finale let you set the bit rate (i.e. quality) of the MP3 file? If not, there is plenty of free software that will convert your aiff file to mp3 and let you set the bit rate.

The ability to change the default format or use something like the Keyboard Maestro macros is especially useful if you need to export a lot of files, as it can save you a lot of time (and a lot of clicks). There's no real need for the occasional audio export, but sometimes you need to export a lot of files at once, as it was my case recently.

Not that I know — I haven't found that option. It produces Bit Rate: 128 kbps / Sample Rate: 44100 Hz, 16-bit MP3 files.

Here's what Audacity gives you. Looks like they consider 128k low quality.
