Songwriter Record Midi Motif XS8

I cannot get Songwriter set up correctly in order to record what i play to notation.
The Yamaha Motif USB drivers are installed and available in the midi setup, but whatever I try it does not record what I play to notation whichever input driver i select. The counter is running but nothing happens on a newly crated score.
I cannot find anything relevant in the manual of Finale I purchased.
To summarize, I open a new notation sheet, go to the midi setup, and select mid input, it lists Yamaha-Motif-XS8-1 to 4 as an option there so it clearly recognizes the keyboard.
I then click on Simple Entry tool, go to "simple" tab and select midi device as input.
I then go to instrument list and tick the on tab alongside staff as it is required for Hyperscribe Tool.
I then press the record button to start hyperscribe and the pinkish cursor appears, but if I play absolutely nothing is written into the bars.
The counter shows that it is moving from bar to bar.
So what is the mystery?
