How do I add rests ABOVE notes?

Songwriter won't let me add rests above notes because the measure is already full. For example, my song is in 4/4 time, and in one measure I want to have a whole note, but with some eighth notes DURING the whole note; the eighth notes are playing while the whole note is holding. The thing is, the whole note is already 4 beats and so the program thinks i'm trying to add more beats to the measure when i'm putting in the eighth notes. How do I do this?
