I need to essentially use notes as text, specifically to show that in my funk shuffle arrangement, two sixteenth notes = a triplet containing an eighth note and a sixteenth note. Is there a way to do that?

There are various fonts that can do this. Probably the easiest is a shareware thing called Museglyphs.

You'd type ss = es3 to get this (it's documented):

Expressions using the MaestroTimes font can do it, too.
Here are some common examples. Copy measure 6 and paste it into your document.

Thank you for all of your help. It's amazing that it's so hard to do this. I used to work in Mosaic in the pre-OSX days, and I could do this no sweat WITHIN the program. I'm just getting back to notation, and the publisher wants me to use Finale, but I find it daunting.

My complaint about Maestro Times is that it's very hard to find the symbols you want, since they're scattered far and wide with not much organization. So it's hunt and peck, and can be frustrating. It looks like the new Finale Maestro Text may be a little better, since Finale puts things in categories when you want to insert something. But MusGlyphs is very easy. In my posting above, as I said, I typed ss = es3 to get what the OP wants. s stands for sixteenth, e for eighth, and 3 for triplet. It can do lots of other stuff, such as time signatures and key signatures. You do have to switch fonts if you want to mix in text.
