I added a timpani part to a score. But when I play it back, the timpani sounds like a tuba. The Instrument List has timpani for both the instrument and the GM. I even changed the GM to harmonica and it still sounds like a tuba. I'm sure this is something simple that I just am missing. Please help. Thanks.

...but I couldn't stop mentally hearing the tubas replacing tympani in the opening to Thus Spake Zarathustra... Vronk, vronk, vronk, vronk... that does mess up the drama a bit, doesn't it?

(Ahem) Back to the question: On the instrument list, did you confirm that the MIDI channel is unique for the tympani?

(Disclaimer: I actually enjoy listening to, and used to play, low brasses.)

I believe that you also need your percussion on Channel 10.

Thanks for the advice. I first tried just simply changing it to channel 10, but it just sounded like the normal drum sounds (bass, snare, cymbal, etc.). So I tried channel 3 and it now sounds like a timpani. Problem solved!
