Ok, so I have a short warm up piece for marching band in which 2 or 3 different instrument parts could fit on one page. Is there any way to do this so that I can save paper?

Maybe. If, and how, depends on the program you are using.

Can you describe more clearly what you have? Is it a 3-staff system, with each instrument on it's own staff? Are they playing at the same time, or one at a time? Or, have you written three individual exercises, and you want them all on a single page? (If it's the last, see the article Multiple Songs on One Page (Finale) at www.specialmillwork.com/finaletips.htm)

It's a single marching band exercise and I want 2 or 3 instruments on a single page.

So normally when I go to print parts, it prints all of the individual instrument parts by themselves. But I want two or three parts on a single page. So maybe the first page can have the flute, clarinet and alto sax. Page 2 can have tenor sax, trumpet, mellophone, etc.

Here's an idea:

1) Set up the layout of the Flute part so that it only uses the upper 1/3 of the page.

2) Set up the layout of the Clarinet part so that it only uses the middle 1/3 of the page.

3) Set up the layout of the Alto Sax part so that it only uses the lower 1/3 of the page.

Now you can print all 3 parts on the same paper sheet, by running the paper sheet 3 times through the printer.

If you want to have the "3 parts on one page" in electronical form, "print" each part to a 1-page PDF document, and combine the 3 1-page PDFs into one 3-page PDF, or into one 1-page PDF.

I could be wrong here, but I think that the latter (one 1-page PDF with all 3 parts in it) is not possible with any free software, since it involves overlaying 3 pages into one combined page.

If I'm understanding correctly (I'm making up the numbers!):
You have a marching band exercise that has 9 instruments. You want to print the score so that instruments 1, 2, and 3 are on one page, 4, 5, and 6 on another, and 7, 8, and 9 on the third.

What I would do is to take my score, and optimize out parts 4-9, save as page 1, go back to the original and remove optimization so all the parts return, optimize out 1-3 and 7-9, save as page 2, and repeat for page 3.

If you want each instrument as a separate exercise, follow the instructions in the article I referenced to place them on a single page.

Here is a solution to your problem that get get the document adjusted in a space available on a single page or reduce the resolution to get perfectly fit to single page.
