Managing parts issues
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
So I'm trying to write a choral piece, and it's not going well. I watched the tutorial (7b) which was vague at best. I am having two problems.
1) I am now looking at one of the parts (Clarinet). How do I get back to the main view, where I see all the parts?? I have looked at every single possible place to return me, but nothing works. I can only work on the Clarinet now, apparently.
2) I tried adding a bass part. It didn't work. Again, I've tried everything I can think of, but it doesn't seem to take; in the Manage Parts dialog box, "bass" shows up in the Linked Parts box but not in 'Stave and Groups in' or 'Available Instruments'. So I doubt that it's in the sheet music but I don't really know because I can only see the Clarinet part!

If you added a staff after using the set-up wizard, then you need to create a part for it manually. Go to Documents/Manage parts, and create a new one. If so far you haven't tweaked any individual parts, you can just press Generate Parts and it will make a new part for each staff.

mulberry9,
Since you are not talking “Finale-speak”, we are having difficulties understanding what you mean.
1) If you go to
Document menu > Edit Score
then is there staff with the Bass?
(You should view the Score in both Page View and Scroll View; it may make a difference)
2) If you go to
Document menu > Edit Part > …
then is there a part called Bass?
If there is a Bass part, then are there only empty measures in the part? or do the measures contain notes and rests?

Sorry if I wasn't clear - doing my best. There is no staff for Bass. There are for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bb Clarinet, Piano. There is no bass staff, no "bass" listed under the "Edit Part" menu. I am in scroll view but have checked Page view as well.
In the Manage Parts dialog box, I "created" a new Bass part and saw "Bass" appear in the first column ("Linked Parts"), but it doesn't show up in either of the other two columns, nor in the notation as I explained.
I just turned off and restarted Finale, and now "bass" doesn't show up in that first column in the Manage Parts any more. It isn't showing anywhere at all.

You need to add a staff for Bass. Go to the Score Manage, click on Add Instrument, and pick bass voice.
Don't worry about parts for now. Write the music in the score. When you are all done with that, go to Manage Parts and click Generate.

I know I need the bass staff - that's what I've been trying to accomplish this whole time. The terminology of "add part" NOT meaning I want to add a bass part to my piece, is very odd to me, and explains why I kept getting led to the wrong place. And the creating of a page with just the bass part showing, being called "ADDING," is misleading - you're not adding a part, you're generating/editing, right? The user manual could be more helpful in directing to the right place.
