Hi there
Is there any way of inserting/repositioning rhythmic notation above a staff, such as you might find in a jazz chart with rhythm cues above the melody. I don't want a separate staff just for the rhythm, as I just want to indicate it for certain measures.
Even if there was a way of repositioning a layer of rhythmic notation for those measures. Any ideas?

Yes that's it exactly - how do you get the rhythmic notation above the staff like that?

1) I did not use the Staff Tool's "Rhythmic Notation", but entered the rhythm as normal Layer 1 notes on high 'a'.

2) Document menu > Show Active Layer Only

3) Selection Tool.
Select the Layer 1 notes, and run the Finale plug-in Ledger Lines (Hide).

4) Utilities menu > Change > Noteheads…
Change noteheads to character #243 (= small slash).




Just for the fun of it I also tried it with a custom staff style "Rhythmic Notation Above Staff" where I have selected to show notes in other layers:

Thanks so much. I figured out from your example to change the noteheads to slashes, instead of using 'rhythmic notation'.
But I seem to have a glitch with my Finale program where I can't access the plug-ins menu, so I'll have to sort that out before I can hide the ledger lines.

Hi, I'm reviving this old thread with a question on Peter's RhythmicNotationAbove1.mus.zip file, posted above (second post above this one).

Peter's file does exactly what I want. But when create that same Staff Style in my document, the rhythmic notation winds up in the middle of the staff (even though I entered the actual notes on A5), not above it as in his file.

What am I missing?

What you are missing, is probably this:
Explanation:
In “Finale-speak” Stem Reversal is the vertical position in the staff (relative to the Staff Reference Line) where the stem direction (up/down) changes.
As you know, this stem direction change normally happens at the middle staff-line.
The vertical position of the Rhythmic Notation’s noteheads = the Stem Reversal position
You can move the Rhythmic Notation higher up by moving the Stem Reversal higher up.

I'm trying to do this as well. But if I use the Layer 1 on High A method won't those notes all show up in my score?

The manual has a section on creating a cue staff but it doesn't explain how to do this. The first instruction is how to enter the notes on the staff. This would seem to assume that the staff itself is already there. I'd love to get this sorted out if anyone can help. Thanks!
