Hello. I am using Finale 2014.5 on my Mac. I am trying to copy hymn music into Finale. How do I get Finale to allow me to, for example, have a half note directly under a quarter note in the same chord? Any help gratefully received.

Finale has a feature called Layers. Put the upper notes in Layer 1 and the lower notes in Layer 2. There are instructions in the manual for this.

Thusly you can enter up to four different notes in one chord. When printed, all the notes will be black. I use the free but excellent CutPDF Writer to save a copy of my work in PDF format, which lets me see what the printed document will look like before printing a hard copy.

The Note Shape Tool in the Special Tools palette also lets you modify note heads, such as use of a diamond shape for harmonics, and you can assign a different instrument to each layer.
