Time signature change, dotted quarter equals quarter?

Finale version 25, Windows (on MacBook Pro in bootcamp), Windows 7 64 bit.

I am new to Finale. While exploring various drop down menus, I saw a tool for placing "dotted quarter equals quarter note", (when changing 12/8 to 4/4). Now, I need that tool, but can't remember what menu it was in.

It is my intention to have playback recognize this new relationship.

Can someone please help me find that menu?

Possibly in the Expression Tool? In the Tempo Marks category?

Zuill is, of course, correct.

Yes. There it is!

Thank you, gentlemen.

Hmm! I am now seeing that the "dotted quarter = quarter" option circled in red, (in miker's post), is not available in my expressions selections window in some of my musical pieces. Does this mean that the options, from song to song, have changed while I was working on each individual piece? As a "newbie", might I have inadvertently deleted certain choices while entering my notes and expressions?

Miker showed this option to be choice number 67. In the piece of mine in question, there is no option number 67.

Can I transplant certain expression selections from one piece to another? Or, is it possible to reset the defaults for that window?

Finally, once applied to a piece, the "dotted quarter = quarter" marker does not play correctly in "playback" mode. (It doubles in speed, compared to what I had expected.

The "down-and-dirty" way to get one expression into another document is by copying a measure from a document to which that expression is attached, and pasting it into another document. You may have to then move it to the correct category, if that is important.

Regarding playback, that is another matter. Maybe attach the document so we can examine how you're doing things.

I'm not certain how to add an attachment of the few selected measures that I want to share.

Here is the file I wanted to upload earlier. Some measures later, it reverts to 12/8, with quarter note equals dotted quarter.

Playback is currently inaccurate. The tempo doubles as the time switches to 4/4.

That's a nice picture, but we can't tell anything by a picture. By a file, I meant a Finale file.

The expression you have used (dotted quarter = quarter) can be defined to have an effect on playback. Edit it, use the Playback thumbnail and in Type -> Tempo, enter the new tempo.

This is what I meant by "I don't know how to upload a file to the forum". More specifically, I don't know how to "create" a proper file for uploading.

(I am a complete newbie to both Finale and this forum.)

In order to isolate just a few measures of my piece, do I have to create a new version of that piece with only the measures under discussion?

Sorry. Can you define the "Playback thumbnail"? Is that the playback control panel at the top of my Finale window?

Thank you, michelp. I am learning a great deal through the instructions I am getting from the members of this forum.

OK. I added a new tempo marking, "quarter note = 104". It plays the new tempo properly.

Now I have an issue with the beat before the "dotted quarter = quarter". (A beat before the change from 12/8 to 4/4).

I don't seem to be able to place a new tempo mark on the 4th beat of a 12/8 measure. The alignment automatically "jumps" to place the tempo change on beat number one.

Take a look at the settings for the Tempo Mark expression category:
Document menu > Category Designer…

Perhaps the category’s Horizontal Alignment is set to “Start of Time Signature”?
In that case a Tempo Mark can only be aligned to the 1st beat of a measure.

Fix:
Either -
- use the Split Measure plug-in to split the 12/8 measure at the 4th beat (you can use an invisible Barline),
- or -
- edit the Tempo Mark category, and change Horizontal Alignment from “Start of Time Signature” to “Horizontal Click Position”

...or use an expression from the Tempo Alterations category, which allows you to place the expression and its effect anywhere in the measure.
