Beaming in 12/16 time

I'm transcribing Mendelssohn's Op 67 No. 2 which is in 12/16 time. I cannot get the beaming to match what is in the original score and I have tried every combination of numbers I can think of. Here are the steps I'm taking:
Utilities > Rebeam > Rebeam to Time Sig > Composite

No matter the combination of numbers I use in the "beat groups" and "beat duration" windows, I cannot make it match the original. I'm sure I'll have to enter different numbers for each measure, depending on the rhythms, but it's the left hand that's giving me the most difficulty. Any ideas?
(Sorry, I'm not allowed to post URLs yet. The score is on IMSLP)

don't make the time signature twelve 16th notes.
make it four dotted 8ths.

Right. Composite is something completely different (perhaps you're thinking of "compound meter").

You want four beats on the top in the dialog. If the dialog starts with 4/4, all you need do is click the left arrow in the bottom slider once. You may want to change the time signature of the piece to that. This will only affect future music you enter, so you'll need "rebeam to time signature" too.

The edition I looked at sometimes beams six 16ths together. If you want to do that, there's a command to make and break beams on an individual basis both in Simple entry and Speedy entry (a slash - /). This is pretty basic, so you may want to read up on it in the manual.
