Creating Text on a Title Page for PART ONLY

I have created an orchestral score with several parts, some of which must start on a left page. Therefore I have needed to create title pages for these parts. I would like the part name to appear on the title page and, of course, this name must be different for each part. How do I do this? Thank you.

I suggest you put covers on your parts, in which case you can leave page 1 blank, but to do what you wish, use the "Part/Score Name" insert when creating your title text. If you've created the blank page from the Page Layout tool, the title text should only appear on parts where you've done that, otherwise you'll need to hide it where you don't want it.

Thanks for your reply, motet. I guess I'm not sure how Finale defines the difference between a Title Page and a Cover. I looked up "cover" in the manual and found nothing specifically about this. I guess I thought my Title Page *was* a cover. If there is a difference could you explain how to create one? I've already tried what you suggested regarding hiding the part name and I can't seem to get the instrument names to change from part to part. I'll keep trying but I'd like to understand this possibility about doing a "cover" instead. It sounds like it could be easier. Thank you.

I'm sorry to have sent you on a wild goose chase! By "cover" I meant a separate piece of paper made of heavier stock to protect the front and back of the part. This would typically be done outside of Finale.

To get the part name on your title page, pick Inserts from the Text menu, then Part/Score Name (scroll down in the picture below). A different part name will appear for each part. If you need help getting the title page to not show up in unwanted places, let us know.

What you've suggested is what I'm doing but it is a very laborious process. I was hoping there would be something more intuitive and less time-consuming. I guess there isn't. I have 12 parts that require title pages. Every title page now includes all 12 part names (11 of which are hidden). After the addition of each part name I have to go back over every title page and physically "hide" the names I don't want to appear. This is a lot of extra work. I'd like to suggest something to be included in a future upgrade - the ability to add text anywhere you want and be able to select the option of having it appear ONLY where you want it to be. I'm still hoping that I've completely misunderstood how this works! Do let me know if that's the case. Thanks again!

The part name insert should change automatically from part to part, so I'm not sure why you have 12 different ones and have to hide things; I think you have indeed misunderstood. In my picture above, where you see the vertical-line cursor under "Symphony", if I had clicked Part/Score Name at that point it would have inserted a special thing that would display "Clarinet 1" in the Clarinet 1 part, "Viola" in the Viola part, etc. Have you tried it? Just click on it and don't change the text that appears.

If you used Finale's default templates when creating your piece, that part-name label you see in the upper-left part of the first page of each part was done the same way--it's a single text block with the Part/Score Name insert. Finale changes it automatically depending on which part you're viewing.

If you insert a blank page at the start of each part, and use the insert for the part name, this should be a fairly easy process.

Got it!! I don't know what I thought I was doing before. It works just fine! I'll make a note of the procedure which somehow eluded me.

Thanks to both of you!
