When entering chords in Finale, they seem to be tied to the beat. I've got several measures which consist of 2 eighth notes followed by a quarter note, then four more eighth notes tied to a quarter in the next measure. I need the first chord to last 1.5 beats, so the second chord starts on the upbeat of 2, and the third chord on the downbeat of 4. I can't seem to figure out how to prevent that second chord from being on the downbeat of either beat 2 or beat 3 without changing the quarter note to two eighth notes. While that seems simple enough, that quarter note belongs fully to one syllable of a word and just doesn't look right splitting a syllable over two identical notes.
Any advice?
Thanks!

If playback is not important for chord symbols (they generally sound awful), just drag or nudge it over. Or, make the time signature for a 4/4 bar 8/8 to show as 4/4. Or use hidden rests as Motet suggested. Interesting behavior in Finale is that you can use hidden rests, place the chord, and then delete the rests and the chord stays put. However, don't nudge it again, as then it will reattach to an existing beat.

To follow up on that method, beaming will work as in 4/4 if you use a composite signature of 4+4/8.
