I've putting a choir piece into Finale 25 so I can learn my part. There are a couple of sections where the piano has a series of quarter notes in the bass.
Every other note is marked with an 8vb expression. When I try to duplicate what it looks like, it doesn't play back correctly. Instead of coming back to the original octave, it all remains transposed down an octave.
Since I only need this for playback, I have handled it by writing the notes down an octave. But how would you handle this so it displays as originally written, with the 8vb on every other note, but plays back correctly?
8vb Expression

Technically, 8va and 8vb apply until cancelled with loco (or else they're written with a bracket signifying the extent), though the way it's written seems to get the point across that it's only for one note. Add the locos, and perhaps hide them if you want.

Actually, this works without locos if you use the Smart Shape tool instead of an expression. I've moved the endpoint to be the same as the beginning, which suppresses the bracket. If you want 8vb instead of 8va, you'll need to change it in the Smart Shape options. (8 or 8va below the staff mean octave down as well.)

Thanks Motet. Both of these techniques work quite well.
This was more a matter of curiosity, since writing the notes down an octave worked also. I've just never run across this before and wanted to know how to get it work like it was intended. You've extended both my knowledge of notational techniques and Finale. Since this isn't something I ordinarily do, I hadn't really noticed the 8va in the smartshape tool, and I wasn't aware what the loco expression was for.
Thanks again.
