Tying notes over another?

I have tried the special tool --> Tie and I can lengthen the tie bar, but the second note still sounds out, rather than sustains.

I have a simple keyboard part, One measure - a dotted quarter note followed by an eighth note followed by a dotted quarter note and then the rest of the measure. i want to tie the two dotted quarter notes together so it sustains "over the eight note. but let the intermediary eighth note sound out (no slur)

I originally had a 1/16 rest forllowed by a 1/26th note, and tried eliminating th erest, but that didn't help

I hope this makes sense

Thanks in advance

Without seeing the actual file, it's hard to give the best advice. For something simple like that, I would put half notes in another layer to get the tied effect.

that would be incorrect notation.

it would help if you could post an example of something like you're trying to do.

The Tie bar jumps the eighth note, but the second dotted quarter still sounds out as if it wasn't tied to

Like I said. this is incorrect notation.
You need to use two half notes, or a whole note, in one layer, and place your eighth note in another layer.
