So.....I use trills a lot in the flute piece I'm working on. Most work just fine, but I've found that in one or two passages where the flute part is "busy," for lack of a better word, adding the trill comes out screwy audio-wise.....hard to describe. The second I remove the trill, the rest of the passage comes out perfectly again. As far as I know, I'm adding the trill correctly....but there's something I must be doing wrong. To be clear: there is nothing whatsoever uncomplicated about the passage I wrote.....in this case it's (4/4, tempo= 110) a quarter note, then triplet eights, then a half-note, which I want to be trilled. Thanks for any help.

A description of the problem gives little for us to work with. If you can post a sample Finale file, we might be able to run some tests.

Oh geez, I posted a response yesterday, no idea why I don't see it now. Anyway, here's the problem attached. I made sure it shows up on this fragment.

This seems to be one of those HP issues where it causes things to go awry. If you use the Articulation tool to add the Tr sign, then add the extension as a separate item, then you can outsmart HP.

Okay, it works fine just adding the trill with the articulation tool, so problem solved. Adding the extension gives more screwiness. Thanks for the assist!

I recently raised the question on Facebook of do you need the squiggly line on a trill? You certainly do if the trilling note is tied to another note. Above a single note, though, there was not consensus. Elaine Gould says it's optional.
