So it seems that the standard flute sound I use all the time (Garritan instruments) somehow sounds a little "degraded" to me....it's sort of annoying sound now, not pure like it was previously, until very recently. Is there something I can check/adjust/reset?

Try turning off any effects and see if the sound is okay. Then apply effects that you choose and hopefully it can sound right again.

I did not add any "effects" unless I did so inadvertently.....? Not sure where to go to check this....I tried score manager--flute, playback settings, but nothing there.....please advise.

In the VST player there is a page for effects. There's also a Mixer. In the mixer, you determine the amount of send for each instrument into the Effects. On the Effects page, you choose what effects you want.

Okay, so I checked and there's no effects at all. I guess I'll just have to live with it....it's not terrible, just feels like it's not as good as it was, but it's still tolerable.

If using a Garritan instrument then Aria Player is involved, which likes to impose excessive reverb and attenuate the volume, presumably to preserve head room. Click on MIDI/Audio -> Edit button right of the bank with ARIA -> drag the fader up -> Control, Mixer and Effects tabs and experiment with the sound, using the keyboard below to audit your work.
You did not explain what you meant by degraded sound. Aria's equalizer is barebones, so I prefer to export the WAV file to a DAW and use a better EQ for a superior sound. Another option is to install a plugin for the particular instrument or best of all, create your own soundfont. A number of free but good soundfont editors are available online for download.

Thank you for this response, long time after I posted. I will work with this and see what I can do; basically I just decided to live with it and at some point I'll upgrade to a top of the line sample set. This is good info; thanks!
