In an SATB piece, how can I move bass notes to tenor notes without over-writing the tenor notes? Thanks.

Tenor notes in Layer one.
Bass notes in Layer two.
Document menu > Show Active Layer Only (check)
Select layer two. The tenor notes should vanish.
Drag bass notes to tenor staff.
Document menu > Show Active Layer Only (uncheck)

Would you explain in a little more detail. If they are sharing a staff and each part is in a different layer, are you wanting to swap the layers? Or combine 2 layers into one layer?

Trying to combine layer 4 into 3, so I can more easily change note durations of a chord.

Don't use layers 3 and 4, unless you have a specific need for them. You can use layers one and two in the tenor staff. Each staff can contain all four layers.

Or are you trying to merge the notes into a single layer, a la hymnal style? If so, use the JW Staff Polyphony plugin.

Can you post a screenshot, so we can better understand?

I am not sure Finale can do that alone. Jari Williamsson has a plugin called JW Staff Polyphony which can do it.

Thanks - the reason I use 1 = S, 2 = A, etc. is I can then create mp3 for each part and send them to choir members.

Still no reason to use layers 3 and 4. You can either split the layers to different channels in Score Manager, or lay out the parts on 4 staves, use the Mixer to emphasize the part you want, and combine the staves for your print copy.

The notes of the Bass staff (in Layer 1) will be moved to Layer 2 of the Tenor staff.

Michel,

That setting will merge the parts to layer one. The setting right below it - Merge to Layers - will put the bass in layer two.

Hi miker,

I assumed that there were 4 staves to start with, in which case the setting shown in my image does the right thing. Tenor remains in Layer 1, Bass moves to the Tenor staff in Layer 2.
