Hi,

Apologies for asking about such an old version: I've been carrying on fine with Finale 2008 for years, but on the latest Windows 10 Acer laptop I bought, the third of the 3 installation CD's doesn't seem to get read by the computer: the "Please insert Disc 3" popup message remains on screen no matter how many times I press the "OK" button on it. The CD reader light flashes on and off normally for a while, and then stops. The disc surface appears pristine, and I store the discs in the plastic case they originally came in from MakeMusic.

Thanks for any help!

Peter

I guess as a last resort I would try copying the disk to a CD-R outside of Finale, then retrying the installation with that. The disk-copying software might try harder than Finale to recover from a read error.

Everything I can find on the web suggests that 2008 is not compatible with windows 10. It is no longer supported by MM, either. You might be due for an upgrade

I still have 2005b on Windows 10 and it runs fine. Not that an upgrade wouldn't provide other benefits.

Have you inspected the disk for scratches (on the top)? You could try copying the disks to a temp directory and run setup from there.

I would fully uninstall Finale, which includes footprints from the registry, before a fresh install. Here are the steps:

1. Run the uninstall file as usual.
2. Run a search for 'Finale' and for 'MakeMusic' in File Explorer -> manually delete residual files and folders. You may need to delete some files individually before Windows will permit removal of a subfolder. Since Microsoft search is unreliable, you can use the free but superior (ad free) UltraSearch app.
3. Create a backup of Windows' registry, using 'Regedit', which is reliable.
4. Use Windows' RegEdit to find 'Finale' and "Makemusic' keys (leftovers) that are still active when the program is reinstalled, right-click on each -> Delete. The latter is a lot of work and may take a long time; so you may want to use the excellent 'Registrar Registry Home Edition' (free) to purge your system of leftovers that bloat the registry and slow system performance. The portable version does not require installation and does not use library files, so the app can be run from a USB stick.
5. Reboot and perform a fresh install of Finale.

Are you running x86 or x64?

I think the problem is the disk can't be read (and he said the surface looks pristine). Deleting things from the registry won't help that, and can be risky.

What was on disk 3—training videos? I recycled most of my old installer sets so can’t go back and refresh my memory.

Here’s an old post saying that disks 2 & 3 could take forever.

There are many reasons a 13 year old CD cannot be read. I used to have a drive that could read disks unreadable on others — perhaps I still do in a box somewhere. If a CD-R, could be a substandard dye layer. I made the mistake of buying a box of Kodak CD-R disks with a 100 year guaranty many years ago — didn’t last 10. Fortunately, not much of what I lost was important.

I once read an article in PC Magazine that stated blank disks are good for 5 years and 50 to 75 years once burned.

If a burned disk is scratched on the bottom, it can be polished; but if scratched on top, where the label is printed, nothing can be done to save the data.

I would use a cloning app to rip the contents onto my HDD then try to install from there. You can search for such a utility at Sourceforge, where there are many open source apps available.
