When you looked in the Smart Shape Options window, you saw the slot that said 8va. However, if you click the Select button, what character did you see? If 8, then look for 8va and choose that.

After picking "Octave up (8va)" in the pull-down menu, click the button that says "Select." (It looks like it's grayed out in your picture, though, which could indicate some font problem).

You need to press the Select button, not the drop down list. It is to the right of the drop down list. When 8va show in the list, press Selct, and choose the 8va there.

When "Show Octave Symbols as Text" is selected, the Select button is greyed out. I am guessing that is chosen. I don't know, because the Drop Down list is obscuring it. If that is checked, it will show as 8. If you uncheck that, it will probably show as 8va.

Here's a quote fro the Mac Documentation about that option:
Zuill"Show octave symbols as text. Select this option to use only numbers 8 or 15, instead of Maestro’s octave symbols. When selected, Finale displays 8 for the octave up (8va) and octave down (8va) markings, and 15 for the two octaves up (15ma) and two octaves down (15ma) markings. The numbers are displayed in the font set for the particular symbol, so if you prefer a font other than Maestro, be sure to change it for each octave symbol."
