Is there a way (I suspect there is) to create an ossia measure with rhythmic or slash notation? Each time I try, the noteheads from my source measure revert to round standard.

Do the ossia in a scratch staff, export it as a graphic, and paste it back into your working score.

Don't use the Ossia tool--it's ancient and buggy. Instead, create a new staff and put your Ossia stuff there. Hide it everywhere else using the Staff tool menu and the Cutaway staff style as needed. Or make a Graphic as Mike suggests.
