Can you split measures and create multimeasure rests across these measures?

I have a section in 7/4 where I believe it is easier for the players to see 4 + 3 and 3 + 4 on occasion. Accordingly, I split the measures (dotted lines) to show this. Measures were numbered 1 measure per 7 beats rather than per each split part. All worked well until I attempted to extract parts and could not find a way to create multi-measure rests in these split measures.

Has anyone figured this out? I could not find a reference on the forum nor with Google.

Thanks,

Rick

In the score, open the measure attributes for the measure where you would like it to break a multi-measure rest and tick the little box for break a multi measure rest.

Are the measures 7/4 with an expression for the dotted false barline, or alternating 3/4 and 4/4 (or the reverse)? If the former, make sure the expression is not set to break MM rests. If alternating meter, then MM rests can't be made.

If you have 4/4 to show as 7/4, then 3/4 to show as 7/4, I think that can be combined into a MM rest. It will show as 2 bars. That can be doctored to move the number off the page and hen use an expression to show as 1 bar.

Maybe you should post a sample file so we actually know what you are doing already.

Here's two measures showing the 4-3 then 3-4 organization. Both measures are 7 4. The dotted line or split measure is just to help the players.

. As you can see, several parts need MM rests.

Zuill, I have read your suggestion and am not sure I understand your last example. As I understand the Split measure utility, it places a dashed (or none) bar line where you specify. While all measures are exactly 7 4, with the dashed bar line their structure alternates 4-3, 3-4. I also could not find a listing of what breaks multimeasure rests in Finale's menu system. If I can uncheck an attribute for the dashed bar line, please direct me to it, Thanks,

The measures are not really 7/4. They are either 3/4 or 4/4, to appear as 7/4. It appears you used the plugin. That is how the plugin does it. If we could see the Finale file, then we could check all that. In measure attributes, you can see if the option to break MM rests is ticked. If you untick that, then you should be able to create MM rests. However, the number showing will be double the amount you want (showing 4 when the "appearance" is only 2)

Zuill thanks.

Here's how my local mentor and I resolved the problem. Go to the part where Multimeasure rests are needed to be created.

1. highlight a split measure, use Plug-in-Measure-Merge Measures tool to remove split (Yes I used the split measures Plug-in to start with).
2. Plug-in-Measure-Merge all measures for Multimeasure rests.
3. Use Quick entry tool to delete measure rests to single Finale whole measure rest (don't worry if it doesn't account for all measure beats).
4. Highlight measures wanted as Multimeasure rest, and use Multimesure rest function to create them. It should work now.

In my case, I cleared 6 7/4 measures, then created Multimesure rests 2 measures at a time since the 4-3 3-4 pattern changed every two measures.

A bit of work and going forward I would only use the split measures Plug-in in the final stages to avoid doing and then undoing the split in order to create multimeasure rests in the parts. Beat descriptions above the measures are mine created in the Expression Tool.
