Two different notes on same line

In a percussion staff I see this. (See image) So how do I do this.

Also Is it worth while to spend the money to up grade my Garritan Instruments so I can get louder instruments for percussion instruments.

Do you mean the notes and the whole rests on the same staff? Done with layers--notes in layer 1, whole rests in layer 2.

I think he means the diamond and the x-noteheads.

In the percussion layout, you can designate noteheads for each type of note: closed (quarter, eighth, etc.), half, whole, and double whole.

Yes diamond and x's. Does it make a difference if you use then or can I just use regular notes? do I have to use the x's?
