Bowings not printing

This is my first official Finale document, which I have completed, saved and extracted the parts. I see that the bowings in my document score and parts do not print either when sent to the printer or to pdf. Before I leap down the troubleshooting rabbit hole, is there some setting I may have inadvertently ticked that would cause this? I am a bit mystified, as I tried to keep everything pretty generic to start.

Could you post the doc? I’m sure someone here can figure it out.

Sure! Thank you!

I attached it to this message. Let me know if I should post it differently.

My progress so far is that I have discovered that the bowings, which I had entered with the articulation tool, were displayed as greyed out, but selectable, as seen in the second line of the first attached image. These bowings will not print.

If I right-click on the bowing, I get a dialog box wherein I can select "Show". (Second image below) At that point the bowing mark turns black, and will print.

There is a further selection (third image) Edit Articulation Definition, which contains a check box for "Display on screen only. Do not print". I do not have this option selected, so presumably am directing the marks to be printed. Why they aren't is a mystery.

I am getting closer to figuring out the problem, but wondered if anyone has an idea of how I got wound around the axle this way.

Thanks!

My guess would be the half-baked SMuFL fonts. Can you switch to Maestro?

Wow! Yes; right away.

well of course it is not simple. Apparently to go from an SMuFL font to a non SMuFL font, I have to create a new template, and import the XML of my original document into it. So I need to figure out how to create a new template. A worthwhile task, I am sure, but maybe not tonight.

Thanks for your help

It looks like the easiest route is to export my document as XML, then import into my husband's Finale 25 instance, which uses Maestro as a default font, vs my 27 which uses the SMuFL Finale Maestro font. We shall see...

It was just a guess that the new fonts were it. Perhaps a simple experiment is in order before you go to all that trouble.

I agree, but I could not find a way to simply change the default font to Maestro. v27 did not seem to want to let me change to a non SMuFL font, or create a new template with Maestro as the default font, without doing it that way.

Indeed.
Perhaps (probably) it will be possible in a later Finale version, but for now, v27 can neither change a SMuFL document to a non SMuFL document, nor change a non SMuFL document to a SMuFL document.

By doing an experiment I meant just creating simple documents with a few bowed notes both with Maestro and Finale Maestro and confirming that the new font is the problem. It could be something else.

It might also work to just change the font for just the bowing articulations.

I created a Legacy doc in the Setup Wizard, and copied Anne's score into it. Notes were fine, but articulations and expressions were not. I was able to change some of them, but not all. They would have to be deleted and re-entered. However, this should avoid the non-functioning issue that has come up in 27.

There is also a link describing how to create a Legacy doc in F27.

Thanks miker and motet. I think deleting and re-entering is what I have to do.

I do wonder why when I right-click and select "Show" on the greyed out articulations, that they then turn black and are printable. I don't really need to pursue that though, as I am going to try re-entering the markings. Which is okay...it is ramping up for a big rain event outside so what better activity?

Thanks for your insights.

If an item in the score is grey, it means that it’s hidden, and won’t print. You can adjust how dark or light the hidden object appears on screen in Preferences > View > Hidden Object Shading

I do wonder how these particular articulations got set as hidden, but I have gone through and specified they show now. I hope to move on and continue in my journey of learning Finale, and discovering its particular set of land mines.

Thank you again.

I am back on track; just wanted to say thanks for the help. I have no idea yet why my bowings were compromised, but I went back in and re-entered everything, and all is well.

On to discover new challenges!
