Trying to transcribe vocal lines with music for SA or TB on the same staff.

If it's two quarter notes on the same beat, no problem: they line up vertically as they should.

If it's, say, a quarter for S and two eighths for A on the same beat, no go. I get a ping and it changes the quarter I've already put in for S to an eighth.

I've been googling and it looks like the solution has to do with levels but I don't understand it.

Layers. You would enter the soprano on layer one, and the alto in layer two.
