Hi folks. I've created a template (a specific orchestra size) but when I've gone back to use it, I've found the Tempo set at 120bpm from the start. But I can't find a way to change this now.

I can add an expression (i.e. quarter note = 80bpm) at the start of the score ... or I can change the Tempo number in the Playback settings to 80bpm. But neither affects the speed with which the score plays back. It's still at 120bpm.

I must be missing something very simple but I just can't work it out. I'm assuming that it's possible (easy) to do, since it would be pointless creating templates otherwise (if you can't subsequently vary the tempo)!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Three things control the tempo in Finale:

MIDI Tool (= the recorded tempo changes)
Expression Tool (= the expression tempo changes)
Playback Controls

And they work in a hierarchical fashion.

The tempo in the Playback Controls is overridden by an Expression that sets a tempo.
This is overridden by the MIDI Tool, which is at the top of the “Tempo Hierarchy”.

From your description it sounds like you should clear Tempo Changes from the document’s MIDI Data:

Selection Tool.
Edit menu > Clear Selected Items…
In the window Clear Selected Items, de-select everything except Tempo Changes.
