control panel gone

I did something that made the program control panel disappear and I can't figure out how to make it come back. All I have on the screen is the file I'm working on and the editing tools. Even the Mac menu bar is gone. I tried pressing Esc but nothing happens. The only way out is to Force Quit the program.

First thing, shut down and restart the computer.

Have you inadvertently gone to Full Screen? If you key control>command>F you'll reverse that.

Another thing that can be accidentally keyed and which causes view problems is option>command>8. Keying it again reverses this.
