So, I click on the Smart Shape tool and the Smart Shape palette appears on the side. When I select the solid slur and then click in my music, I get a solid slur. When I click on the dotted slur, then click in the music, I get a dotted slur. But when I click on the hairplin descrendo and then click in the music, I get nothing. I have tried clicking in every possible place I can think of -- on the staff, above the staff, on a note, on a bar line, I have tried clicking in different ways, but I get nothing. Why is this? And how can I get a decrescendo in there?

Have you tried 1½ click (+ drag)?

I mean
down - up - down (and hold down)

Then, drag to the place where the hairpin should end.

I'm not sure what you mean by 1 1/2 click. Or by down-up-down ..

Hairpins aren't entered with a single click. Double-click and hold the mouse button down on the second click, then drag to create the hairpin. It's explained in the help manual (press F1) http://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/Fina ... t=hairpins
